Full of love and adventure, western Jon Braun gears up for stops on Formentera and in Santa Eulària

jon-braun-2Forerunners in puppet theatre Anita Maravillas arrive in the Pine Islands with an all-ages western inspired by a popular song by Imanol Urbieta. With a sharp-as-knives aesthetic and large doses of humour, love and adventure, Jon Braun speaks to brotherly bonds and the power of love when faced with adversity.

A hit with audiences and critics alike, Jon Braun won Best All-Ages Family Production at the 2018 Titeremurcia. The show opens on Formentera on Saturday 26 October at 6.00pm in the Sala de Cultura (Cinema) and in Santa Eulària des Riu on Sunday the 27th, also at 6.00pm, at the Jesús Centre Cultural.

Jon Braun is included in PLATEA, a programme launched in 2014 to take top-quality domestic stage productions to island audiences by the Spanish Institute of Performing Arts and Music (INAEM), itself a division of Spain’s Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.

Jon Braun traces the story of two American Indian brothers who are separated by the white man, but so strong is their love that the two never give up trying to find each other. The emotion-packed story is about the strength that love affords us when confronted with misfortune.

Jon Braun is no ordinary cowboys and Indians flick; the two leads are brothers who upend every stereotypes. Malintxe is stealthy, brave and a master of his own decisions; his younger brother Jon Braun is tender, and an unforgettable anti-hero.

The production runs fifty minutes, and tickets to the Formentera show are €5 and can be purchased the day of the event. Accompanying adults get in free. Tickets to the Santa Eulària show cost €9 if purchased at www.festivalbarruguet.com, or €10 at the CCdJ the day of the event.

Book club encouraging islanders to ‘read and enjoy’ takes off at Villangómez library

llibres-club-de-lectura1The cultural wing of the Consell de Formentera reports that on Tuesday 19 November at 8.00pm, Biblioteca Marià Villangómez will host the first gathering of the library’s book club, «Llegeix i gaudeix» (Read and enjoy), with librarian Lorena Francisco Garcia.

The idea for the club took root among a set of local booklovers. Participants read a book at home and reconnoiter at the library on the last Tuesday of each month to discuss what they’ve read.

Education and culture councillor Susana Labrador described initiatives like the book club as “a way to promote reading among islanders, and, at the same time, create a group connection around a pastime that’s educational, key for developing critical thought and a great source of entertainment, too, plus you can do it anywhere, at any age”.

First book: El sopar
Organisers of the first session have suggested Dutch author Herman Koch’s The Dinner (El sopar in Catalan), a stinging, provocative work that takes on the satisfied and complacent social classes in the Netherlands and, by extension, across Europe.

Marià Villangómez library in Sant Francesc has 10 copies available for checkout. All interested readers have to do is register (by sending an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ), then stop by the library, pick up a copy of the book and read it before 19 November, when participants meet and share their thoughts.

New visiting hours at La Mola lighthouse

foto erro far 1The cultural branch of the Consell de Formentera reports that from tomorrow, Tuesday 15 October, new visiting hours will be observed at La Mola lighthouse. Winter hours—Tuesday to Saturday from 10.00am to 2.00pm—mean visitors can continue to enjoy the lighthouse space all year long.

Divided into two clearly distinct exhibition spaces, the cultural and educational centre opened on 1 July. The permanent exhibition explores its main focus—the sea—from a variety of angles: the marine environment, natural resources management, navigation and light signals. A second space is dedicated to temporary art exhibits.

On Friday 11 October the rotating exhibit space welcomed Erró al Far. The 12-piece exhibit of colour lithographs with dates between 2001 and 2012 was culled from the artist’s own bequeathment to the culture office.

General admission is €4.50. Admission is free for Formentera residents, visitors under 18 and the unemployed, and pensioners and students get in for €2.50.

Discussing plans for Balearic Islands Day celebrations

foto-reunio---preparacio---dia1Councillor of Culture Susana Labrador met today with the director general of inter-administration relations, Miquel Àngel Coll, to begin coordinating work on the events programme for the Balearic Islands Day (Dia de les Illes Balears) on 1 March. Part of an effort to make festivities reflective of diverse interests across the archipelago, recent years have seen the regional government encouraging island councils to take an active role in planning.

The Consell de Formentera and Govern balear will strike a collaborative agreement about programming that promotes a regional identity while still honouring the distinctive qualities of each island. Councillor Labrador welcomed the visit from Director General Coll and pledged that Formentera’s local government would “cooperate to ensure that this year’s programme is a complete one, and that there’s something for Formentera residents”.

Staff from the local and regional administrations were also in attendance at the gathering.
