VI Annual Àlex Corretja Tournament

torneigalexcorretja2013 webThe Formentera Island Council's councilor of Sport and Community Involvement, Sergio Jiménez, presented today in press conference the plan for this year's edition of the Àlex Corretja Tennis Tournament. To be held 10, 11, 12 and 13 October, the tournament will accompany this year's celebration of the patron saint of El Pilar de la Mola. In attendance at the press conference were tournament director Omar Juan and Club de Tennis Illa de Formentera director Josep Lairon Hernández.

This is year will be the sixth for the tournament, which returned after a twelve-month reprieve. The event was brought back thanks to the efforts of the Formentera Office of Sport and the Club de Tennis Illa de Formentera. Organisers hope that the tournament will once again become a fixture on Formentera's calendar of sporting events.

Participating in the boys' and girls' categories of the 2013 edition are 35 children from Mallorca, Eivissa and Formentera who will take to the municipal tennis courts over the course of four days.

Competition will begin the afternoon of Thursday 10 October and will draw to a close with the final round of matches on Sunday the 13th. The relatively small scale of this year's edition belies the goal of the municipal tennis school: to turn the tournament into a reference in the Balearic and national spheres.

The tournament has a budget of approximately 3,000€, money that will be used to cover the cost of this year's grand prize: a master class in Barcelona given by Àlex Corretja to four finalists.

Formentera's tennis school has always snagged excellent rankings in competitions. These success stories, along with events like the Island of Formentera Àlex Corretja Tournament, once again brighten the future of tennis on the island.
