XII Beni Trutmann Photography Competition, award ceremony

beni2014 webThe call for submissions for this year's – the twelfth – edition of the Beni Trutmann Photography Competition was answered by 46 people. Stronger in number than last year, participants this year submitted a total of 118 photos in the categories of black & white and colour. Of these submissions, 50 were selected for inclusion in the competition's accompanying exhibition, set to open today, Monday, 28 April, at the Exhibition Hall of the Old Town Council. The date coincides with the day of Trutmann's death, and the exhibition will remain open Monday through Saturday and 11 am to 2 pm until 9 May. Winners were selected by a jury composed of: one representative of the Formentera branch of GOB (Balearic Group of Ornithology and Defence of Nature); one representative of Obra Cultural Balear and an assortment of individuals renowned for their experience in the visual arts. Presiding over the jury was also a representative from the Formentera Island Council.

The competition has become one of the island's most highly-anticipated. It is an opportunity for photo-lovers to offer up representations of nature on the island in all of its incarnations: not only landscapes and flora and fauna, but creative representations of human interaction with nature as well. These submissions stand as proof of a commitment to nature and to a defence of the environment.

With this annual celebration of photos, the Formentera Council wishes to preserve the memory of Beni Trutmann and provide photo-enthusiasts the opportunity to take an interest in the work left behind by one of Formentera's most celebrated photographers.

The Beni Trutmann photo competition has become a well-established event on the island and progressively fomented participation among residents here. The encounter's twelve years of history have moreover left the Council with a valuable photographic archive, the content of which may be used for non-profit purposes in any graphical work the Formentera Council deems appropriate (posters, signs, Internet, etc.) to the promotion of Formentera and its different tourist spots.

Today's exhibition has become a standout event on Formentera, made clear by the participation of photographers from Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Lugo and Zaragoza. Past editions of the Trutmann competition have even seen participants hailing from Switzerland and Germany.

Awards for competition winners will be handed out today at 8 pm; the same time as the exhibition opening.
