New REB regulations to affect waste transfer between Formentera and Eivissa

The Formentera Council, and councilor of the Economy and Presidential Cabinet Bartomeu Escandell, attended this week a meeting of the Fórum Balears Competitiva at the Consolat de Mar of Palma de Mallorca.

The encounter – the fifth of its kind – served to gather suggestions for the Madrid central government in its upcoming revision of the REB.

Formentera's submission raises three points with reference to the new REB: transportation, waste collection and water.

With regard to transport, Escandell explained the “tripla insularitat” (“triple isolation”) that affects Formentera, as well as the added cost that the condition supposes. As for the cost of physical goods , Formentera's submission emphasised “the possibility of studying other alternatives to the current system of cost-reducing government assistance.”

Then, with respect to waste collection and transfer, the Formentera Council and Govern Balear concur in their suggestion that waste transfer from Formentera to the Ca Na Putxa treatment plant (Eivissa) be addressed in the REB.

The third point concerns water and compares the cost overrun paid by our island to the price of water presently met in other parts of the country.

Councilor Escandell stated that “Formentera is not asking for treatment that is different from the one received by other regions. We are asking for measures that ensure similar conditions – at least – across the Balearics, especially with regard to items of primal necessity: transportation, rubbish collection and water.”
