Es Cap welcomes new improvements to mobile phone and Internet service

telefonia mobilFor several days now, the Es Cap de Barbaria zone of Formentera has boasted improved mobile phone and Internet coverage. Specifically, two different companies – mobile and Internet carrier Movistar and WiMAX antenna-based Internet provider IBred – have considerable network coverage in that part of the island.

Lack of mobile phone service in Es Cap – particularly in the area stretching from the Cala Saona highway to the Es Cap lighthouse – has been an historic problem and a perennial complaint of area residents and visitors.

Improved service came after both telecommunications companies installed new booster stations on a communications tower near the Es Cap rubbish tip. Though owned by the Formentera Council, usage of the tower is shared by both the Council and Govern Balear.

That particular communications tower was mounted in 2013 as part of a project devised to improve digital television signals in the area.

The principle driving force behind the improvements was a call launched by the Council for voice and data communications providers. One condition for bids was the ability to provide network coverage in 95% of the area.

The Formentera Council invited all interested telecommunications companies to install booster stations on the Es Cap communications tower and Movistar and IBred were ultimately the only two companies to oblige.
