'Proud to Fight for Equality'

Presentacio cartell orgullCouncilwoman Vanessa Parellada and staffer Azuzena Carrasco spoke today on the run of activities lined up by the Formentera Council in celebration of this June 28's LGTBI Pride Day. The chief of social welfare described Pride Day festivities as an outgrowth of the Stonewall riots that gripped New York in 1969 and deemed the day “a clarion call in the struggle for universal values like equality, respect, diversity, liberty and non-discrimination.”

Programme
Under the banner “Proud to Fight for Equality,” this year's Pride starts Monday, June 26 with a roundtable looking back at the first twelve months of Spain's most recent LGTBI law. Lena Castells, head of coordination and support for sexual and gender diversity in the Govern balear, will lead the 7.30pm discussion in the CiF Office of Culture's lecture hall (sala d'actes).

An outdoor film screening of Matthew Warchus's Pride is in the works at Sant Francesc's Jardí de ses Eres for Wednesday, June 28 at 10.00pm. Stephen Beresford's script looks at how two distinct  communities—a crew of gays and lesbians and an association for miners' families—found a common cause in the struggle for equal rights.

The programme culminates Friday at 8.30pm with a show at the door of the Sant Ferran church. “Alerta Raspall de dents” (Mites lèsbics i altres deliris) is a playful excoriation of stereotypes by Gypsy Nel·lo and Leo Alburquerque.

In Balears, Parellada hailed a piece of landmark legislation, adopted last year on May 30, which guarantees equality for LGTBI individuals and takes aim at sexual identity- and gender-based phobias. “As a progressive administration,” Parellada said, “grasping the baton and securing visibility for LGTBI islanders isn't just a good opportunity for us, it's our duty.”

Parellada and Carrasco invited everyone on the island to come out for the events, pledging that June 28, “to fight for equality with pride.”
