Next Saturday at cinema, Formentera celebrates fourth Cantada Pagesa

iii-cantada-pagesajThe traditional music department of Formentera’s School of Music and Dance has joined forces with the island’s Department of Culture to put on the fourth Cantada Pagesa this 22 February. The free show starts at 8.30pm in the Sala de Cultura-Cinema, and space is limited. Organisers see the event as a way to develop renewed interest in traditional redoblat, glosat and recitat singing styles. As in years past, twenty-plus musicians will be on stage, from music school pupils to singer-songwriters of all ages.

Clinic on traditional instruments, Saturday in the Sala de Plens
New this year, the patrimony department will host a workshop showing participants how to build some of the musical instruments that are customary on Eivissa and Formentera. The clinic takes place 22 February at 11.00am in the Sala de Plens (next to the Formentera Day Centre). One of the few remaining active master artisans in the Pine Islands, instructor Toni “Marc” Riera Roselló will walk participants through the building process and explain the materials and tools necessary to fashioning a homespun instrument.

Not unlike past efforts to cultivate interest at Christmas and Easter in the carol-esque songs known as caramelles—which gained renewed currency thanks to classes at the School of Music and Dance—the current programming offers islanders a chance to enjoy and better understand traditional song and music on the island, and are part of the School’s twentieth anniversary celebration.
