The Consell de Formentera is pleased to report that it has allowed the Formentera branch of the national postal service to use its GPS system to geolocate 3,600 rural homes and 800 roads, beaches and places of interest. The Consell launched this geolocation system in 2016 to improve the response times of the island's emergency services.
"By enabling Correos to use this system, we hope that letter carriers can identify parcel delivery points more easily and offer a better service to islanders", explained Rafael González, Councillor of Mobility and Territory.
Formentera's letter carriers have already begun to use the system to identify addresses in remote corners of the island and the routes to access them. In the first days of operation, Correos improved ratios of shipments delivered in the Sant Francesc delivery unit by more than 60%. The local Correos office also asserts that the GPS system has helped reduce the number of items returned due to unknown or incorrect addresses.
The Consell de Formentera has collaborated by providing five free licences of the associated app, which is now used by letter carriers on their mobile terminals.
