8 islanders submit to exam for artisan accreditation

foto 2021 mestres artesans CThe Formentera Office of Commerce is pleased to report that exams will take place this week for aspirants to the island's accreditation for artisans and craft tradespeople. Seven candidates exercise trades in jewellery, costume jewellery, passementerie, carpentry and object decoration, and the eighth will vie for the title of Master Artisan in jewellery. The previous round of exams occurred in 2017.

President and Commerce Councillor Ana Juan wished examinees good luck and insisted, "The fact that eight artisans are undergoing examination is testament to their interest in professional training and growth, not to mention to the good health of our artisanry on the island". Juan pointed out that "craft markets are part of our identity, an asset to tourism and a modest local industry that we must look after".

Examination and competences

A technical committee made up of master craftspeople and municipal staff specialists visits applicants' workshops, where examinees are asked to make the items for which they seek accreditation, while members of the examining board observe examinees' working methods and ask practical questions regarding technique and production process.

Visits last approximately 20-25 minutes and, depending on the nature of the request, whether for the title of artisan or master artisan, candidates must display basic notions of the trade and trade-specific tools, equipment and machinery, as well as of the origin of materials used, processes of preparation, handling, production and finishing, safety and hygiene requirements of the trade and more.

A minimum one-year work experience in the field is required to take the artisan accreditation exam, and ten years' experience is required to obtain master-level credentials. An examinee's trade must be included in the Consell's Craft Trade Repertory. Today on Formentera there are about sixty accredited artisans, ten master artisans and four honorary master artisans.

Formentera insists changes key to making tourism management competences equitable for four islands

foto 2021 promo turisticaAThe Vice President and Councillor of Tourism Management and Promotion, Alejandra Ferrer, participated today in the first presentation of the Mixed Devolution Committee regarding conferral of authority on tourism management to the Consell de Mallorca. Attendees of the gathering heard the definitive terms of the authority transfer, which took place because Mallorca was the only one of the four islands without authority in the realm of tourism management.

Ferrer pointed out that when the committee first convened, Formentera backed creation of a research unit to re-evaluate previous competence transfers and ensure they were equitable. "We're asking for an expansion of competences and funding", said Ferrer, "and we're asking that the provision of civil servants, software and hardware set to benefit the Consell de Mallorca be effective for Formentera as well". Ferrer called the review "necessary upkeep", and stressed that a considerable amount of time had passed since past power transfers had taken place: 24 years in the case of the Consell d'Eivissa i Formentera and 13 years for the Consell de Formentera.

In consequence, Ferrer abstained from the vote and reiterated her plea for a joint assessment of the competence hand-off agreed with the other islands, as happened with the hand-off of tourism promotion powers to the governments of Mallorca, Menorca and Formentera. The terms of that deal came under review and were revised based on the transfer package which had been offered to Eivissa two years earlier.

"In short", concluded Ferrer, "we want to account for the allocation of more than 60 workers, as well as financial and technological resources, and to review the needs of the other island governments so that this distribution is equal, fair and on par with current needs".

Over five days, Formentera Fotogràfica finds some 100 photographers revelling in the art of the image

foto 2021 ffCThe ninth Formentera Fotogràfica came to a close yesterday, capping what FF director Francesc Fàbregas described as “a five-day run that saw 100 participants enjoying photo-related talks, workshops and outdoor activities set against the incomparable backdrop of Formentera”.

On hand were celebrated professionals such as Sofía Moro, Txema Yeste, Lua Ribeira, Ana Esmith - Miss Beige, Nando Esteva, Luis Tato, Cristina de Middel, Jon Cazenave, Paco Gómez, Gloria Oyarzabal, Fernando Maquieira and Ferran Forné of the ARA newspaper.

Fàbregas gave a positive assessment of this year's gathering, noting that "yet again, Formentera Fotogràfica has opted for an eclectic programme with the aim of giving space to, promoting and highlighting the inherent richness of contemporary visual culture in Spain".

Consell de Formentera president and councillor of tourism Alejandra Ferrer celebrated the fact that Formentera, which she described as “the ideal setting for this type of event”, finds itself once again associated with photography. She also stressed that local government organises these events to attract visitors outside the high season.

The Consell de Formentera sponsors Formentera Fotogràfica — intimate hands-on and theory-based sessions conducted by big names in photography and contemporary visual culture that help shape a space for knowledge, reflection and collective creation. The function is aimed at professionals, students and adepts of images who wish to exchange experiences with actors from the world of photography in an ideal setting like that of Formentera.

Registration for 2021/22 pottery course open

The Formentera Office of Commerce is pleased to unveil a pottery course geared toward adults and spanning November, January and February at Centre Antoni Tur 'Gabrielet'. Interested parties can register from today until 8 November through the Virtual Citizen Information Office (OVAC) or in person at the OAC.

Deputy chief and commerce councillor Ana Juan welcomed the opportunity to offer the course during what she described as "a very sad year for everyone considering the passing of the course’s creative heart and soul, Remedios Castillo". For Juan, "Reme was more than a teacher and potter; it’s plain to see by the affection she gave to and received from her students and people who knew her. I'm sure she’d be very proud to see us carry on her work". The current offer is intended for islanders who took up ceramics under Castillo and are keen to continue, with organisers promising additional insight into assorted pottery techniques.

This year’s instructor is Tania Agredano. Space is limited and classes are available in the morning and afternoon. The price is €220 and there is a 30% discount for students under 25, pensioners and people with disabilities.
