Islanders at Day Centre help combat underage drinking

foto 2021 centre dia no t ofeguisA group of individuals receiving care at the Formentera Day Centre donned T-shirts emblazoned with the message ‘Don’t drown in alcohol’ to help drive home the importance of preventing alcohol consumption among underage islanders. The push is backed by the Formentera Office of Social Welfare and aims to delay the start of alcohol consumption among islanders, or prevent it outright, as well as combat the illegal sale of alcoholic beverages. ‘Don’t drown in alcohol’ launched last May and will continue this winter with new awareness-building actions. To achieve the initiative’s objectives and educate young people and business owners about putting a stop to underage drinking, additional collaboration has come from other areas of the island’s government, law enforcement, businesses, SMEs, schools, local families and sports clubs.

Formentera to get shelter for at-risk under-12s

foto 2021 centre de diaThe Formentera Department of Social Welfare is working to secure a residential shelter for children under the age of 12 who are in unsafe situations. The 10-bed centre will be located beside the adult day care facility in Formentera’s medical services hub, and the project, coordinated by local government and scheduled for completion in three years, has already secured funding to the tune of €370,000, including €150,000 in EU funds for economic recovery.

Social welfare chief Rafael Ramírez said the future refuge would enable “improved care for island kids whose domestic settings are not safe”. Formentera currently has no live-in services for children in unsafe situations and relies on neighbouring islands’ facilities for help, with all the inconveniences that entails. Ramírez said the home would “put us in a position to give individualised and family care for our under-12 service beneficiaries, thus creating a better environment for mental and social care”.

About 30% of minors receiving FDSW services could use the home, meaning the facility marks a considerable improvement in quality of care, allowing at-risk minors to remain on the island and in their community.

Councillor Ramírez called the future shelter “a resource for vulnerable families”, insisting such vulnerability is a problem which “specifically affects the most frequent carers and parents: women”.

‘Don’t drown in alcohol’ material to be passed out at summer camps

foto 2021 no t ofeguisThe Formentera Department of Social Welfare is pleased to announce it has received material to be distributed among young participants of the island’s summer camps (escoles d'estiu). T-shirts, bottles, backpacks and badges have been emblazoned with the campaign’s graphics. A banner was also commissioned and has already been hung at sporting events. Young islanders’ role has been essential: they designed the graphics and the slogan, plus they had a hand distributing posters to businesses and will continue to conduct similar outreach during the coming school year and at other events.

Formentera expands support for at-risk kids and teens

cartell 2021 poster ANAR BThe Formentera Department of Social Welfare is stepping up support for at-risk children and adolescents on the island through a deal with the Anar Foundation, an organisation that promotes and defends the rights of children and adolescents who are susceptible to risk and neglect.

Social welfare chief Rafael Ramírez stressed the collaboration meant “more robust support for minors locally” and described the Anar Foundation as “very useful and accessible for young people 24 hours a day, 365 days a year”. The support service is also professionally-staffed, confidential and free of charge. Ramírez said the initiative would allow Formentera’s child protection services to expand their scope, and insisted the Consell would continue to work in close collaboration and share information with the 25-year veterans of non-profit work.

The Anar Foundation’s online support for children and families encompasses a variety of areas. The psychology, legal and social work professionals at the Children and Teens’ Helpline (116111) listen to callers as long as they need and assist in finding solutions to problems.

The Anar Foundation also maintains an email address (balears@anar.org) and chat (www.anar.org) for immediate, anonymous help from professionals.
