Consell de Formentera extends deadline for taxes and local fees until 1 December

The Formentera Tax Office reports that, as first announced in April and as part of economic relief measures stemming from the pandemic, islanders will benefit from a two-month extension on this year’s payments of taxes and municipal fees. The new deadline is 1 December.

During the second half of September, individuals who have set up direct deposit will have taxes and fees automatically debited from their accounts. However, those that wish to postpone payment can do so by contacting their bank before 15 September and contacting the local headquarters of the Balearic tax office (Agència Tributària de les Illes Balears; C/Eivissa, 9; www.atib.es; tel. 971 321 577) prior to 1 December to avoid additional fees.

Formentera’s half-marathon postponed till 15 May 2021

The Formentera departments of sport and tourism marketing report that, following indications from the Balearic ministry of sport amid the covid-19 public health situation, the twelfth Mitja Marató (Half-Marathon) and 8K fun run that were scheduled for 10 October will be suspended until 15 May 2021.

Initially moved from 16 May to 10 October, the ongoing pandemic has forced the event’s adjourning until next year. “It’s crucial we ensure the safety of everyone involved in the event”, said sport department chief Paula Ferrer, “whether participants, volunteers, public health workers, security personnel or spectators”. Ferrer described suspending the runs as “the most reasonable solution”.

The decision was reached by consensus between the event’s organisers at Unisport Consulting, the Formentera sport and tourism marketing offices and representatives of the local tourism sector on the Consell’s Committee on Tourism Marketing (Comissió de Promoció Turística).

Applauding would-be participants’ “support and understanding” amid what the company described as a “painful decision”, Unisport Consulting apprised athletes that, by 31 October, they could opt to either automatically transfer their registration to 2021 or receive a full refund. Local business owners pledged to do everything possible to work with each participant on the issue of bookings.

Consell offers health dept. two contact tracers and asks for better info on public health protocol

In a letter today from the Consell de Formentera president to Balearic health minister Patrícia Gómez, Alejandra Ferrer proposed local government’s assistance, in the form of two dedicated contact tracing staff, to contend with outbreaks of covid-19 popping up in the islands. Said Ferrer in her note, “We’re suggesting that these two individuals, hired by the Consell, receive protocol training from the health department and that they interface with department chiefs on a day-to-day basis to optimise coordination. It’s our feeling that the presence of people familiar with the on-the-ground realities of Formentera can go a long way to streamline and improve the work”.

President Ferrer asked Ms Gómez for “good inter-government communication so that Formentera’s policymakers can be clear on Govern directives at all times and keep islanders in the know accordingly”. “It’s crucial that the information we receive come quickly and from official sources”, said Ferrer, “especially when protocol changes and criteria or information updates are involved”. The only way people will follow isolation protocol is if they are informed, said the president, who reiterated a request for transmission data on an island-by-island basis, saying such individualised updates on new infections were essential to understanding the impact of transmissions and the measures being taken to contain them.

Ferrer concluded her letter by highlighting what she called “the overarching end-game”: “whatever form of collaboration helps us stop transmission and uphold public health protocol in the best way possible, particularly as we face the start of school and related activities”.

Muntsabee’s “Vida Morta” takes up at Centre ‘Gabrielet’

foto 2020 vida morta 1Today through 8 September, Centre Antoni Tur ‘Gabrielet’ will host Vida Morta, an exhibit by the Barcelona-born and Formentera-based photographer Muntsa Darné, alias Muntsabee.

Vida Morta at its core is a reckoning with death”, confides the artist. “It’s about my uneasiness with regard to things that have ceased to exist or simply transformed into something else. Loss is a profound feeling at times difficult to express”, she asserts.

Darné insists each of her pieces is a creative process meant to transfer an emotion, and to share it she uses words and symbols of beings that are no longer here: a butterfly, a coded letter in a book...

The exhibit will be on view 11.00am to 2.00pm and 6.00pm to 10.00pm until 8 September (closed Wednesdays and Sundays).
