New trail for birdwatchers on Camí des Brolls

foto 2020 ruta es Brolls 2The Formentera Department of Tourism unveiled a new ornithological circuit on the country road, Camí des Brolls, that cuts across the area of Es Brolls. Newly erected round the perimeter of Estany Pudent are eight display panels that highlight the area’s environmental particularities, its history in terms of salt extraction and the birds and other wildlife which call the humid stretch of land home. In addition, from 15 June a birdwatchers’ observation screen will go up—a change that was placed on hold due to the fact nearby birds are currently nesting.

The ornithological route runs 4.3K (one way) and can be done on foot (1h 20 minutes) or bicycle (20 minutes). The €5,811 project, an initiative of Strategic Tourism Sectors (Segments Estratègics Turístics), was funded by the Sustainable Tourism Tax. Two more trails are expected to follow: one detailing 14 nearby heritage sites and another, a fitness trail for runners starting in Llevant and snaking around Estany Pudent.

Tourism marketing chief Carlos Bernús traced the origins of all three projects to requests from the island’s tourism sector, and said the aim of the trails was to “offer visitors new experiences in nature, heritage, culture and sport that locals can enjoy too”.

Local cabinet urges Govern to implement 061 service on island

On behalf of the governing team of the Consell de Formentera, social welfare chief Rafael Ramírez will use the upcoming monthly full-house assembly to float a proposal to push the Balearic health ministry to “implement measures necessary to establish” a base for the 061 emergency response service at the Formentera Hospital. The proposal underlines the need to coordinate the service’s jumpstarting with the reopening of borders, and to separate patients with respiratory symptoms.

In addition to asking for a reactivation of the 061 service, the proposal points to the importance —irrespective of any 061 service changes— of once again reinforcing staff if activity at the hospital returns to 2016 levels.

“More than just summer reinforcements”
Conseller Ramírez said that amid the current public health crisis, “a rethinking of circuits at every level of government is imperative. It’s something that the administration is cognizant of”. But, he continued, “the 061 service isn’t just about giving Formentera a needed summertime boost; we’re talking about enabling our hospital to properly care for patients based on the presence or absence of respiratory symptoms”.

The proposal underscores physical distancing and hand-washing as tried-and-tested Covid-19 protocol, saying they are the reason hospitals are currently seeing differentiated circuits based on whether or not patients display respiratory symptoms. However, certain circumstances —when both a doctor and nurse are dispatched on an ambulance call, for instance— make putting in place such circuits more complicated.

According to Ramírez, “a differentiated 061 service at the hospital would mean the possibility of differentiated circuits if new travel conditions, and the attendant influx of residents and visitors, lead to new Covid-19 cases”.

Crews clean and disinfect Centre de Dia

foto 2020 netejaIn recent days Consell de Formentera cleaning crews have disinfected inner patio spaces and the exterior of the island’s adult care centre. Though personnel have begun returning to work, the Centre de Dia remains closed to the public, and islanders who normally get care there are currently benefitting from at-home and over-the-phone assistance from Formentera social services staff.

At present the local government’s cleaning team is still engaged in special operations to disinfect and pressure-wash high-traffic spots in the main towns of the island.

Consell de Formentera implements safety upgrades at Porto-salè turnout

Foto 2020 millors seguretat viariaThe Consell de Formentera has overseen changes designed to make the juncture of highway PM-820 and the carretera de Porto-salè safer. In recent years, the crossing has been the site of a disproportionate number of sometimes deadly accidents.

Upgrades:

-Solid line from the CEPSA petrol station into La Savina to prevent motorists from dangerous passing attempts.
-Reduced speed limit (from 90 km/h to 70 km/h) to prevent rear-end collisions, one of the most common accidents at this stretch of highway.
-Bigger and better signage highlighting reduced speed limit and dangerous intersection.
-Cleared vegetation near the intersection for improved visibility.

The measures put local roads on the right side of the island’s 2019 Plan for Sustainable Mobility, and are also in line with a measure which was green-lighted at local government’s February plenary session calling for urgent action at the section of highway in question.

The Consell has begun efforts to set up a radar speed trap between the CEPSA petrol station and the Porto-salè turnout, and is preparing upgrades that will make turning in and out easier for drivers.

‘Talks for families and teachers’ closes with Estela Berenguer on “Formentera es queda a casa”

cartell v2020 xerradesThe Formentera Department of Social Welfare reports that social educator and family mediator Estela Berenguer will wrap up the lecture series ‘Xerrades per a famílies i docents’ (Talks for families and teachers) by unpacking the debate on punishments and rewards. “Recompenses i càstigs en polèmica” will air live on the Formentera es queda a casa Facebook page at 5.00pm on Thursday 21 May.

Thursday’s lecture concludes the nine-part series that began 10 October and which social welfare conseller Rafael Ramírez described as “a place to learn and share knowledge and experience with professionels about topics related to our children’s education”. “In the space of a year the number of lectures has jumped from five to nine, nearly doubling”, said Ramírez, who offered that, for the Formentera Department of Social Welfare, the aim of the initiative is “give families tools for tackling these issues”.

The FDSW-sponsored series received extra help from the island’s office of education, teachers’ resource centre and federation of parents.
