Workshops on pregnancy, infants and families

cartel jornada embarassades bi1The Formentera Council's culture office reports that Tuesday April 2 and Wednesday April 3, Biblioteca Marià Villangómez will host day-long learning events about pregnancy, newborns and families.

The sessions are divided into three parts: pregnancy, a newborn's first months and parents. Instruction will be given by Marta Català Toran.

Taking place Tuesday April 2 at 6.00pm, the first session is for pregnant women and partners who are ready for the chance to use music to start building a bond with their child.

The second session, on Wednesday April 3 at 11.00, is a workshop for parents of babies up to six months old. It is envisioned as a space to breathe and stock up on musical tools to share with their children.

Space is limited at both events and all those interested in participating are asked to register in advance via email at biblioteca@conselldeformentera.cat.

Marta Català got her education and professional training at Fundació Esplai, where she directed cooperation projects —always firmly rooted in education— with Bosnia and Guinea Bissau. Her passion for communication and education propelled her to storytelling with storyteller Numancia Rojas. With that experience under her belt, and nurturing a love of music, Català took up two-tone accordion and traditional song, a pivot which has shaped a more than ten year trajectory performing stories, romances and songs for newborns, children and adults.

A special 6.00pm storytime for newborns (zero to six months old) will crown the educational sessions on Wednesday April 3. In «Bosquim Boscam», Català's accordion will provide the melodies for a stroll (or crawl) reviewing the assorted musical adventures of the previous days.

Formentera takes part in premiere Balearic Child Friendly City day

foto-jornada-unicef1CiF social welfare councillor Vanessa Parellada participated today in UNICEF's “Building municipal networks to promote rights of the child”, a day-long event for Child Friendly Cities in the Balearic Islands.

Parellada sat for the round-table “Sharing good practices for Child Friendly Cities”, where she reported on work within the Formentera Council, a Child Friendly City since 2014. The councillor also underscored coordination between CiF offices to propose integrated initiatives for children and youth that foment recreation options on the island.

Parellada continued by highlighting efforts to boost young people's participation, holding up youth plenary sessions celebrated twice yearly at the Council seat.

“This is not the 'invest in our future because kids are the adults of tomorrow' talk”, said the councillor. “We're saying youth deserve a place at the table by virtue of their worthiness as human beings”. She continued by saying kids “should engage in civic life and bring their own outlook—those optics are often to thank for adults learning important lessons. Sometimes it's about obvious stuff, like recycling, and sometimes it's something that makes perfect sense...but that we adults seem to have forgotten”.

Parellada saluted the collaboration of the departments of the Council in renewing the island's Child Friendly Cities bid and pushing forward with the initiative. She celebrated the work of associations that work with children, giving a special nod to groups that work around functional diversity and offered concluding praise to sports clubs, schools and Formentera's other social stakeholders.

In Barcelona, Formentera pitched as destination for families

foto-fira-barcelona1The Formentera Council's tourism department reports that from today to Sunday March 24 local reps will be at Barcelona's Montjuïc fairgrounds promoting the island at the B-Travel expo. Two tourist canvassers will present Formentera as a family destination that can be visited 365 days a year.

Formentera has its own stand with promotional material spotlighting heritage, nature, culture, gastronomy and the full spread of fitness events organised on the island at the beginning and end of the season.

Figuring among the promotional fare is information about a new marine museum (and future tenant of la Mola's lighthouse), the first edition of the book "Sabores de Formentera" and the latest version of the smartphone app "Formentera 365", which features complete information about the island.

Catalonia is one of Formentera's chief sources of tourism.

School for parents and teachers: The collective art of raising a child.

escola-pares-mestres-2019-xarx1The Formentera Council's education department unveiled today the 2019 programme of “School for parents and teachers: The collective art of raising a child”. The programme covers three informational talks for parents and teachers that will take place between next Tuesday March 6 and Thursday May 2.

The initiative is about creating places of learning and exchange between families and educators. The idea, says education and culture councillor Susana Labrador, “is to come up with common learning space where everyone has a voice—that's where the organising efforts of the CiF education office, the Federation of Formentera Parents Associations (FAPA) and the CEP teacher training centre come in”.

The three conferences will start at 6.00pm in the Sala d'Actes, next to the Sant Francesc library.

-Tuesday March 26: Manel Güell Barceló. Communicating assertively: emotionally intelligent communication.

-Monday April 15: Betlem Gomila Serra. The other side of sport: transmitting values.

-Thursday May 2: Pepa Horno Goicoechea. Learn to love. Learn to trust.
