With abstract pieces, Moni Formentera makes début at Centre ‘Gabrielet’

cartell 2020 moni formenteraFrom tomorrow, Centre Antoni Tur ‘Gabrielet’ welcomes Renéixer, a display of abstract pieces crafted by artist Moni Formentera by means of “pouring” — a method where acrylics are mixed in a particular medium to produce a liquid paint. With the technique, colours create shapes and flow in manners based on how they are poured and how the tableaux are handled.

The exhibition is the artist’s first at Centre ‘Gabrielet’. Self-taught, Moni Formentera holds accreditation as a local artisan and has worked with a variety of methods in recent years. She has also collaborated at the Centre de Dia and local primary schools.

The exhibition will run from 25 July to 3 August and is open from 10.00am to 2.00pm and 6.00pm to 8.00pm.

Guidance for Escola d’Estiu counsellors

foto Assessorament Escola EstiuThe Formentera youth office reports it is offering an advisory service to workers at the Escola d’Estiu summer camp programme.

The service aims to promote teamwork strategies and offer counsellors tools to identify their emotions and camp participants’ as well as improve communication with participants and their families. Expertise in both areas has taken on added significance in the context of the covid-19 pandemic.

“Professional support is a key part of helping Escola d’Estiu staff and directors tackle the challenge they face in 2020”, said youth consellera Vanessa Parellada, “not to mention guidance so they can work through doubts stemming from the current situation”.

“Children get their first idea of what to expect in school from Escola d’Estiu counsellors”, Parellada continued, “so these workers need support dealing with the anxiety that current unusual circumstances can trigger. It is crucial that counsellors’ interactions with children be rooted in cool-headedness and naturalness”.

The service is offered by CEPCA director Belén Alvite. Two face-to-face sessions have already taken place, with more to follow, including an online option, in the weeks ahead.

Formentera launches video spotlighting island’s non-essential businesses

foto 2020 compra a FormenteraDeputy premiere and commerce chief Ana Juan was joined by Lidia Álvarez, director of the island’s small- and medium-sized business group, in unveiling a video that courts Formentera’s visiting tourists by spotlighting the virtues of local businesses. “Small, family-run, neighbourhood commerce is one of the island’s complementary draws”, said Juan, “plus it means added value for our visitors, so, in that sense, we want to show them what we’ve got and how we’re unique”.

Featured in the spot are 13 local businesses which specialise in clothes, beauty products, accessories and jewellery. The establishments, as Consellera Juan pointed out, were forced to close during emergency orders and are now reopening in a season where many typically favourable conditions are absent. Juan applauded the efforts that local business owners have made to adapt to emerging covid-19 preventive measures and ensure customers a safe shopping experience.

Lidia Álvarez said the video was about showing visitors that “the things they buy on Formentera can’t be found in big box stores; they’re products with personality and unique character”.

The video (available here on the Consell de Formentera’s YouTube channel) will be promoted on the social media accounts of the Consell de Formentera, particularly those directed at tourists, as well as on the social media accounts of Pimef and Trasmapi. The video will also be shown on Mediterrania Pitiusa ferry rides. Fruit of collaboration between Pimef and the Consell de Formentera, the initiative also receives support from the commerce division of the Balearic government.
