Consell says 4th drugs and addictions plan now in offing will be tailored to 'reality on ground'

The Formentera Office of Social Welfare (Conselleria de Benestar Social/CBS) has started preparing the fourth plan on drugs and other addictions (2022-2025) with support from the Health and Community Foundation. Social Welfare Councillor Rafael Ramírez said the new plan was "badly needed" and insisted, "Drug use is a perennial challenge forcing us to constantly adapt policies and lines of action". In Ramirez's words, "the aim is to offer people a service that is perfectly suits to their needs from a comprehensive and people-first standpoint".

The previous plan has been in force since 2018 and is due to expire next year, "so we need to make sure the new plan is in step with the reality on the ground and that it can respond to current needs", said Ramírez, who put alcohol and drug consumption among the "common concerns of families and professionals from an array of different fields". Ramírez underscored CBS-backed initiatives like 'Don't drown in alcohol' that seek impact around the situation.

The plan covers initiatives and actions to be carried out by the various actors of the social, economic, educational and healthcare sectors, and addresses drug use in a cross-cutting manner integrating axes of inequality such as gender, cultural diversity and age.

For more than 25 years, the Health and Community Foundation has worked in research, prevention, intervention and awareness-raising around various health and social problems disproportionately affecting groups that are at risk or facing social exclusion. The non-profit is listed on the state registry of foundations and is committed to issues of social justice. It is controlled, supported and subsidised by distinct levels of the public administration that have trusted in its services for years. The contract between local government and the Health and Community Foundation has a duration of five months and is valued at €6.750,00 (VAT included).
