Local events celebrating international breast cancer awareness day

foto AECC 2018 1Social welfare department head Vanessa Parellada sat down with Pepita Gabaldar, head of the Formentera branch of Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer, to unveil the activities programme that will commemorate the global awareness day for breast cancer on Friday October 19.

On Friday, AECC will put together a information stand in Sant Francesc's central square. A dinner that night at Hotel Cala Saona (€40 per plate) aims to raise money for AECC. Reservations can be made by calling 670 291 414 or 636 514 596. Evening entertainment will include music and a raffle with prizes donated by Teresa Matilla (a painting) and Enric Majoral (jewellery), two artists whom Gabaldar thanked for their contribution.

A fundraising walk to stop cancer is in the works for Saturday October 20. Participants will set out at 4.00pm from the fisherman's wharf (Moll de Pescadors) in La Savina. Registration costs €7 and walkers will receive a free T-shirt for participating.

For two days—this Wednesday and next Tuesday (October 16)—islanders can visit an information stand in Sant Francesc's town square in the morning or the island's fitness centre, Poliesportiu Antoni Blanc, in the evening, to register and get their T-shirts.

Oncological psychology
Parellada hailed the “enormous efforts” of Formentera's AECC chapter in expanding service at the local hospital. In December 2015, a psychologist specialised in oncology began visiting the island's hospital every Tuesday and Thursday to assist in the emotional, psychological and social aspects of treating cancer sufferers and their families.

AECC Formentera say they are looking ahead to a January of courses to improve the quality of care that volunteers give patients both in hospital and on home visits. Instruction will be provided by Palma-based specialists and the Formentera hospital's own in-house psycho-oncologist.
