Seaweed removal to serve in construction of Sant Ferran de ses Roques public housing

posidonia retiradaThe Council of Formentera, by way of its Office of the Environment, has removed 500 cubic metres of Posidònia oceanica seagrass washed up along parts of the Es Ca Marí shoreline, an important part of it coming from a stretch of the beach were numerous fishermen's dry-docks are found.

The dried seaweed will be used in the construction of fourteen units of officially-protected housing in Sant Ferran. In light of building restrictions in vigour beginning 15 June and extending through the summer season, the collected plant matter will be held on the island's rubbish tip until it can be transported to Sant Ferran for use.

The dried Posidònia will be employed in the insulation and sound-proofing of walls in the new buildings. The Sant Ferran housing project was one of the finalists in Premis Endesa 2012 (a competition in the promotion of sustainable real estate) and at the International Competition of Mediterranean Bioarchitecture BAM012 in the categories of 'territory' and 'materials'.

The Balearic Housing Institute (IBAVI) is the entity charged with overseeing the execution of building plans. The public housing complex will be located upon a plot of land provided by the Formentera Council. A significant portion of funding for the project will come from the Life+ 2012 programme.
