The councilor of Social Welfare, Youth and Equality of the Formentera Island Council, Dolores Fernández Tamargo, is in Eivissa today attending the I Conference of Child-friendly Cities in the Balearics, held in Santa Eulàlia des Riu.

The day-long conference will include the participation of Santa Eulàlia mayor Vicent Marí, the councilor of social affairs, Ana Costa, the president of UNICEF Comitè Balears, Maria Antònia Caimari, the president of UNICEF Eivissa, Carmen Fano, and the councilor of Health and Social Welfare of the Eivissa Island Council, Mercedes Prats. Joining them will be representatives from the Children's Council of Santa Eulàlia.

The programme was initiated in 2001 by UNICEF España with the support of the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality. Its objective is to promote the application at the municipal level of the Convention on the Rights of the Child using local plans that support youth, encourage child participation and foster work between different municipalities.

Formentera's councilor of Social Welfare, Dolores Fernández, participated today in two talks that focused on two important themes from last year, “Campaign for Equality” and “Youth Centre”. We remind readers that UNICEF's Comitè Balear recently awarded Formentera's Office of Youth recognition for good practises; in the category of Right to Participation, the Office was recognised for its equality campaign and in the category of Right to Play, Leisure and Free time for the work of the Youth Centre in its production of “Es Molí”. The effects of the two projects were felt in different aspects of city life, promoting socialising among children and youth through general interest and social services.

This round of awards and recognition of good practises are part of a move to recognise the fact that the work of the municipality is central to child socialisation. For this reason, we must continue to work to guarantee an outlet that represents the voice of children, in a safe and enriching environment, and one which allows for physical, psychological, social and moral development.

Another conference will also be held this afternoon on Formentera in which the head of Awareness Programmes and Child Policy of UNICEF, Sílvia Casanovas, will provide information on the “Child-friendly Cities” programme.
