De Far a Far, a new Formentera race

defarafar webThe Formentera Island Council's councilor of Sport, Local Celebrations and Community Involvement, Sergio Jiménez, presented today in press conference details regarding the new footrace – De Far a Far – to be held 13 April in Formentera, starting at the lighthouse of Es Cap and finishing at the lighthouse of La Mola. Omar Juan, president of Grup Esportiu Espalmador (Espalmador Sports Group), was also in attendance at the morning's presentation.

The event evolved from a desire to add a new recreational footrace to the panorama of activities on the island in April, a period of time when no such gatherings were traditionally held. Thus, the Office of Sport decided to plan something that would be less a competitive sports event and more a gathering of sports lovers.

The De Far a Far circuit connects one tip of Formentera with another, 26 kilometres away, all the while following secondary itineraries and at a handful of points running parallel to the island's main highway. To date, approximately 40 people have also registered for De Far a Far's walking version, to be celebrated the same day. To cap off the day celebrating a shared interest in sport, a community paella at the local La Mola schools will follow the race, the cost of which is included in runner registration fees.

Organisers hope to register between 150 and 200 athletes for the fledgling race, a magnificent opportunity for individuals to simultaneously discover not just the pleasure of running but some of the island's best kept secrets as well.

The event's organisers have already put in place medical and ambulance services for the duration of the race, and participants will be covered by an insurance policy contracted in case of accidents. The length of the trajectory, runners will also have at their disposition several refreshment points.

As witnessed with the success of competitive events like the Formentera Half Marathon and Formentera to Run, its favourable climate and oft-lauded visual beauty make Formentera the ideal setting for a sporting event of this sort.

Both the Grup Esportiu Espalmador and the Formentera Council wish to thank the efforts of the Baleària transport company, which has offered a 50% discount to all those runners coming expressly to the island to participate. The deadline for registration is 11 April and all participants must pay a fee of 10 euros which includes food at the community paella and a commemorative T-shirt. Interested individuals can register on the www.elitechip.com website. The De Far a Far footrace is organised with a budget of 5,000€.
