Public cleaning operations clear 400 kg of waste from Es Trucadors

campanya1The Formentera Council, by way of the local office of the environment, oversaw special cleaning operations last week in Es Trucadors, the area at the northernmost tip of Ses Illetes beach.

A total of 20 bags weighing roughly 20 kilogrammes each – making a total of 400 kg – were filled with waste and removed for disposal. In general, empty food packages formed the greater part of the rubbish that was picked up, but a considerable portion was also discarded material that had washed ashore from nearby boats.

The Council wishes to state its appreciation for the concessionary cleaning service provided by the employees of Ferrovial. Given the location and the fact that the area is often subject to great numbers of visitors, cleaning operations in the Es Trucadors area can be complicated.

Councillor of the environment Sílvia Tur urged beach-goers “to make an effort to ensure that all those food and beverage packages – full when they arrive seaside – make their way back to the parking areas and wastebins.” In Tur's words: “A clean beach is everybody's business.”

The office of the environment has announced another of its services: removal of abandoned watercraft around S'Estany des Peix. Since 2010, 77 boats have been removed from the lake.

Council procedure calls for removal when vessels are visibly inoperative and lacking number plates, a fact that clearly converts them into waste objects. According to Councilor Tur: “We are currently removing three watercraft in disrepair but that have number plates visible. Formalities permitting their removal should be completed in the coming weeks.”
