In February 2015, make way for digital cinema on Formentera

sala cinemaThe Formentera Council has awarded the Kelonik Digital Ltd. company the contract to upgrade the municipal cinema and equip the facilities for Digital Cinema, a new standard in commercial cinema projection. Until now, Formentera has used an analogue system which requires a physical reel for film projections.

After the thirty-day, €49,120 installation, films shown at the cinema will reach the island via Internet. One of the improvements that audiences will notice is that new films get to the island earlier.

As a result, 26 and 28 December at eight in the evening, Formentera audiences will take in the last movie to be screened in analogue-format on the island – Ninja Turtles. Subsequent commercial projections are placed on hold until the second week of February.

Other normal activities at the Formentera cultural hall, which is frequently recognised simply for its function as the municipal cinema, will not be effected. On 4 February, programming at the hall begins at half past five with an early evening production of children's theatre and finishes with a monologue by Jose Botó (nine pm; €5 admission).
