The infrastructure department of the Formentera Council announces the successful completion of a project to reposition shade-making structures across car parks near to Illetes, Llevant and es Cavall d'en Borràs beaches.
The work required a €150,000 investment over three years, which the Council unlocked thanks to a reduction in the yearly fee the Balearic coastal authority charges the administration to occupy the parking areas.
Until 2016 the Council paid annual dues of €45,000 to occupy the land. The coastal authority lowered its asking price to €4,200 on the condition Formentera's local administration agreed to reposition the pergolas.
“This partnership is the Council's way of stepping up to the task of service and image upgrades in these areas of the nature reserve”, explained infrastructure and mobility secretary Rafael González. In 2011 the coastal authority agency opted to remove the shade-making parts of the pergolas, leaving only the wood pillars that had held the structure up.
The upgrades were carried out by the Formentera Council and the Ibifor company.
