Second year of Formentera Sports Photo contest

ja arribas 1er premiThe Formentera Council Office of Sport has announced a November 25 deadline for submissions to Concurs de Fotografia Esportiva, a sports photo contest now in its second year. Submissions will be accepted in person at the Citizen Information Office (OAC), by certified post and online, by contacting fotografiaesportiva@conselldeformentera.cat. Sports councillor Jordi Vidal explained that email submissions —a first this year— “are intended to make it easier for photographers to share their work with us”.

In Vidal's words, the contest was created as a way to “show sport in a different way and encourage people, through photos, to get active”. Photos should be essentially sports-related or be somehow related to a facet of sport. Three prizes —first place, €300; second, €200 and third, €100— will be awarded.

Conditions of entry
Three photos maximum will be accepted per person. Photos must be original submissions and must not be entered in any other competitions. The image can be in colour or black and white. Physical prints must be on paper and unframed with a minimum width of 20 cm and a maximum height of 40 cm. Formats include square, digital, classic and panorama. Online submissions must meet the following requirements: photos must be saved as .jpg files no larger than 8 Mb. In the digital category photos can feature modified tone, saturation, light, contrast, levels and curves, but no other editing is permitted.

Paper submissions will be accepted at the Citizen Information Office (OAC), carrer de Ramon Llull, 6, and must include an envelope with the photographer's full name, address, email and a telephone number.

Photos will also be accepted via certified post sent to Consell Insular de Formentera, plaça de la Constitució, 1, 07860 Sant Francesc Xavier, Formentera. Such submissions should include a similarly marked envelope and a pseudonym for identification purposes.

Online submissions must be sent to fotografiaesportiva@conselldeformentera.cat with the following information: applicant's full name, email address, telephone number and town.

On all photos, contestants are asked to include a title as well as mention of the place and date it was taken. A jury of individuals with experience in visual arts will select the winning photos and awarded recipients will be announced in early December. The photos will be displayed at the Antoni Blanc sports centre.

Volta Cicloturista Formentera is cyclists' chance to get their ride on

foto presentacio bttCiF sports councillor Jordi Vidal and Daniel de la Dueña, operations manager for the department, together with Jesús Ferrer of Grup Esportiu Espalmador and Nuria de la Torre of Trasmapi, unveiled plans for a mountain bike race around the island from October 29 to 31. BTT Volta Cicloturista Formentera (BTT is the acronym in Catalan and Spanish for “all terrain bycycle”) will take place without any interruptions to vehicle traffic and is expected to receive some 100 participants.

As organisers explained in a press conference this morning, the race will be split into three stages that are held over three days and will entail participating cicloturistes' riding 119 kilometres and braving a combined total of 1,463 meters of incline. More hardcore cyclists also have the option of taking part in another mountain bike tour, BTT LA MOLA. Already considered a classic after twelve years, the circuit used for BTT LA MOLA is more difficult and is classed as an eligible event for the Pitiüsa islands' mountain biking championship, dubbed Challenge del Campionat Pitiús de BTT. From the Basque Country's Guipuzkoa province, Ibon Zugasti will be on hand not only to compete, but he is also the event's special guest.

The Formentera Council organises BTT Volta Cicloturista in hand with Grup Espalmador Esportiu and Unisport Consulting. Organisers pledge the annual fixture will always take place in late October to ensure numbers remain manageable and participants can enjoy the perks of Discover Formentera in October. Councillor Vidal gave thanks to Trasmapi, the race's chief sponsor.

Rollout of Formentera's plan to promote values in sport

foto presentacio campanya1This evening at 8.00pm the Centre Antoni Tur Gabrielet was the scene of a presentation of the Pla de Valors Esportius, a plan laying out good values in sport hatched by the Formentera Council and the Govern Balear. Attendants included CiF president Jaume Ferrer, sports councillor Jordi Vidal, the Govern's minister of sport Ruth Mateu, that department's chair, Carles Gonyalons, and other members of the Formentera sporting community. The gathering also served to premiere a video by local filmmaker Alfredo Montero that will be used to spotlight local sports values in the Balearics.

Earlier this year Mateu and Ferrer signed into effect a partnership that turns on a programme —"Posam Valors a l'Esport"— to promote sportsmanlike values among school-aged children on Formentera. Under the deal, the Govern will cofinance the programme with €10,000 and the CiF will put forward €5,000. So far the money has been used for training and outreach regarding positive values and attitudes in sport.

Jacobo Domínguez, first Formentera native to win Balearic trap shooting contest

foto campio tir al platCiF vice president Susana Labrador and councillor of sport Jordi Vidal met today with Jacobo Domínguez Tur, the first Formentera native to win the Copa Balear, a trap shooting contest in the Balearic Islands. The competition, celebrated since 1999, was held last weekend on Menorca.

Councillor Vidal seized the opportunity to congratulate the young skeet shooter, who was only too happy to receive the honour of being the island's first Copa Balear title-holder. “It's a big responsibility”, said Domínguez, “and a great satisfaction to have lifted up Formentera even just that little bit”.

The Balearic champion began practising skeet, or trap shooting, at 14 years old. Today he is 22. Alongside Domínguez was another member of Formentera's local shooting assocation, Joan Ferrer, who also participated and came in fourth.

More than 200 expected for 4th Formentera Triathlon

foto presentacio iv triatloFormentera's councillor of sport, Jordi Vidal, appeared today in the plenary hall of the Formentera Council to announce details regarding the fourth year of Formentera's triathlon, which is slated for Saturday October 8 in es Pujols. Vidal was joined by his department's staff specialist, Daniel de la Dueña, as well as Núria de la Torre, a representative from Trasmapi, a company that is sponsoring the sports event.

Next Saturday between 220 and 230 triathletes —over 50 more than last year's event— will take part in three trials: olympic, sprint and a group trial. At 2.30pm sprint and group participants will set out on a 750-metre swim in the es Pujols bay, followed by 20 km by cycling ride and, lastly, a 5-km run. Participants of the olympic trial will start at 4.15pm with a 1,500-m swim, then move on to a 40-km bike ride and a 10-km run.

Interested individuals have until Thursday to sign up on the elitechip website, or additionally have the option of registering the Saturday of the event between 9.30am and 1.00pm in es Pujols' plaça d'Europa. Participants' numbers will also be handed out at that time.

Traffic interruptions
Between 2.50 and 7.00pm the road that links es Pujols and la Savina will be closed to traffic up to Ses Illetes. Councillor Vidal presented his apologies to island residents, who will need to use alternate routes during that time.

Vidal also thanked Trasmapi for its sponsorship of the triathlon —included as part of Discover Formentera in October, a bid to attract off-season tourists— for the fourth year running. He also expressed his gratitude to the Guardia Civil, local police and all the other volunteers whose contribution will make the event possible.
