This Tuesday 8 December, 42nd John Tunks Memorial Mini-marathon features running and skating

cartell 2020 john tunksThis Tuesday 8 December, Grup Esportiu Espalmador will host the 42nd John Tunks Memorial Mini-marathon in association with the Consell de Formentera. The event will feature a 12K itinerary that participants can run or skate along with a 2.8K option for young ones, but covid-19 safety measures mean under-12 modalities typically held in the streets of Sant Francesc will have to wait. Contestants must wear a mask until the trial begins and put it on again when once they’ve crossed the finish line. The awards ceremony has also been temporarily suspended, with plans in place to offer winners their prizes as they arrive.

The 12K modality is full, but space is still available on the 2.8K circuit that sets out from Sant Ferran. Registration at this year’s event is free. Interested parties can sign up and get complete information about the competitions at www.elitechip.com or at Plaça de la Constitució in Sant Francesc until 10am the day of the function. Numbers will be handed out the same morning from 9.30am to 10.30am.

Start times:
10.30am—Skating, single category
11.00am—John Tunks Memorial 12K Mini-marathon
Approx. 11.40am—2,800m circuit with start in Sant Ferran

Traffic will be blocked from 10.30am to 1.00pm along two stretches of PM-820: from La Savina to Sant Francesc to the first Sant Ferran roundabout, and from La Savina to Es Pujols to Sant Ferran.

Participants from off the island are invited to use a free round-trip shuttle to get from Port de La Savina to the starting blocks in Sant Francesc.

Formentera welcomes ‘Formentera Kite Spain Series’ sporting event for kitefoil

foto 2020 kitefoilThis weekend local waters will provide the backdrop for a kitefoil regatta known as the Flying Sardine FKSS 2020. Europe’s only circuit for Olympic windsurfing, the Formula Kite Spain Series (FKSS) is spread across five trials in 2020. Three have already taken place in Alarcón, Castelló and Mallorca and the final fixture of the competition is scheduled to play out in Tarifa this December.

More than forty people have signed up for the event in Formentera, a two-tier trial divided into the Open for world-renowned stars of the modality and the F-One, an amateur competition geared towards newcomers.

According to tourism chief Carlos Bernús, trainers, family members and friends accompanying the thirty participating athletes mean that over a hundred people will be arriving on the island for the occasion. “At this time of year, they’re more than welcome”, asserted Bernús.

The competition benefits from backing from Formentera’s departments of sport and tourism, with sport consellera Paula Ferrer emphasising the added visibility that sports like windsurfing, which claim many followers on the island, stands to gain thanks to the event. Ferrer encouraged fans to attend the fixture, which is scheduled to take place in Ses Illetes.

One of the fixture’s standout contestants is ten-time world “free style” champ Gisela Pulido. This weekend will mark the circuit leader’s first time competing on the island, and Pulido insisted that the presence of opponent Julia Damasiewicz ensured the competition would be hard fought. “Julia’s a big name in the game”, she said, “and neither one of us intends to pull any punches”.

The regattas will be held in Ses Salines nature reserve. Official training will begin at noon tomorrow (Friday), with trials starting at the same time Saturday and 9.30am on Sunday.

Formentera welcomes first crop of clinics tackling sexual violence in sport

cartell 2020 curs prevencioThe Formentera Department of Sport reports that yesterday marked the start of a five-day course designed to help participants prevent sexual violence in sport. Organised by Espai Dones in association with the Consell de Formentera, the series of day-long clinics for trainers, sport clubs and sport professionals will take place at Centre d’Esports Nàutics and blend textbook and hands-on learning.

Sports chief Paula Ferrer was in charge of presiding over the course’s kick-off. “In the quest to eradicate criminal acts like sexual violence, equality training and education —even in the world of sports— are crucial”, said the consellera.

“We’ve come a long way in recent years, female athletes are more visible and relevant than ever before, but it’s not enough; we’ve got a long way to go. It’s critical we continue developing equitable policies that protect those of us who are still enduring sexual violence everywhere. Sexual violence still happens in sports”, she said.

“I’m thrilled to see Formentera hosting this course”, said Espai Dones chair Dolores Fernández Tamargo. “It’s going to help participants get up to speed on best practises and protocol to prevent sexual violence in sports.”

Five days of training
Yesterday’s inaugural session was tuned to helping students come to grips with the concept of sexual violence in sport. Today participants will learn about legal aspects of the issue and related legislation. Wednesday’s class will include information about ongoing strategies to tackle sexual violence in sport, and Thursday will see participants taking part in an equality workshop. The week of training will conclude Friday with a lesson on best practices and a round-table discussion. The event will feature Marta Lliteras, who will speak to attendees about Binomi, a sports company; Oti Camacho, with insight about taking the leap and captaining a sports club; Bàrbara Marchal, a specialist in Nordic walking and year-round sports, and Pilar Calvo, who will talk about the importance of active community groups.

Part of the local activities programme for International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the course also received organisational support from Women in Professional Sport (AMDP) — a group founded in 2016 to fight for the rights of women in sport. AMDP’s Balearic chapter launched this July.

Saluting AMPD’s efforts to build awareness in the world of sport, and bemoaning the fact that the pandemic had prevented this year’s course from being open to the public, Councillor Ferrer pledged the Formentera Department of Sport’s continued support “for initiatives like these in the struggle for equality”.

23–25 Oct., it’s the return of Formentera’s BTT Volta Cicloturista and BTT La Mola

foto 2020 presentacio BTT La MolaThe Consell de Formentera announced details today about the BTT Volta Cicloturista Formentera, a non-competitive mountain-biking ride organised by the Formentera Department of Sport in association with Unisport Consulting and GE Espalmador that will see participants touring the island in three stages on the 23rd, 24th and 25th of October.

The historic Volta route remains unchanged, covering 97.5K and netting a total elevation gain of one thousand metres. On Sunday 25 October interested mountain-bikers have the option as in years past to participate in BTT La Mola—a 24K competitive ride with start and finish in El Pilar de la Mola and a net altitude gain of 800 metres. The ride, which turns 25 this year, is also a qualifying trial for the BTT Campionat Pitiús. Participants can alternatively opt for a secondary, non-competitive route following some segments of the competitive circuit.

Alluding to other sporting fixtures canceled on account of the pandemic, sport consellera Paula Ferrer told media reps at the press conference she was “satisfied at finally being able to host programming”, adding, “We’re confident that little by little sports on the island will return to normal”. She also underscored pains taken by Unisport, GE Espalmador and staffers in the Formentera sports department: “They’ve been working overtime in recent weeks to get this event off the ground whilst making sure all the boxes are ticked in terms of sanitary protocol”.

Among the other faces at the presentation were Unisport director Manuel Hernández; GE Espalmador spokesman Jesús Ferrer, and Alex Marí, head of marketing at sponsoring-firm Trasmapi.

The first stage of the ride —a 29.5K circuit starting and finishing in Sant Francesc— will begin at 4.00pm on Friday 23 October. The second —a 39.5K loop with start/finish in La Savina— begins at 10.00am, Saturday. And the final (non-competitive alternate) route starts at 11.00am in La Mola.

Open registration ends 23 October and can be completed on www.elitechip.com.
