Formentera unveils photographic treasure hunt and family-friendly tour of island's cultural and scenic heritage

The Formentera Office of Tourism is pleased to present a photographic treasure hunt of local landmarks and a family gymkhana in which two fictional children's characters highlight part of the island's heritage and history. According to Alejandra Ferrer, Consell de Formentera vice-president and councillor of tourism, the initiatives are about "offering experiences to our visitors, whether they come alone, with friends or family". The two initiatives offer detailed information on featured monuments. The first encourages interested parties to participate by taking souvenir snapshots which can later be printed out at the Tourist Information Point in La Savina. The second offers participating families a book for the little ones.

Photographic treasure hunt
The treasure hunt covers ten points of cultural and scenic interest on Formentera. Each one is equipped with a special stand where visitors can place their mobile phones and take a souvenir selfie with an ideally framed shot. Photos can then be shared on social media by tagging Formentera Tourism @visitformentera. Sharing entitles participants to print two souvenir photographs free of charge at the Tourist Information Point of La Savina.

"The initiative has the added benefit of promoting the island so that we get photographs on social media that show Formentera at its best", said Ferrer. The creative minds behind the initiative prepared for the project by studying the most suitable locations, including a panoramic view of La Savina port, Plaça de la Constitució in Sant Francesc, La Mola lighthouse and more.

Family gymkhana
With a parallel gymkhana made specially for families, two fictional children's characters, Trobi and Tana, lead participants on a tour of some of Formentera's heritage and history. The gymkhana spotlights ten points of interest, some of which coincide with those featured in the photo route. At each stop visitors will find a QR code that they can scan to learn about the featured landmark in question. Families that scan the QR code at six of the ten points can visit a Tourist Information Point and pick up their own copy of "Explore Formentera with Trobi" (Explora Formentera amb Trobi), in which Tana, a local lizard, shows visiting Trobi some of the island's charms.

Information on the two routes is available at Tourist Information Points, on the Formentera Office of Tourism website (www.formentera.es) and by scanning QR codes at photo stands.

Formentera offers visitors 24-hour FAQ service via WhatsApp

The Formentera Office of Tourism is pleased to announce that the WhatsApp-driven information service it offers to visitors in seven languages is now available 24 hours a day. Previously, this service was only available during office hours, but now, thanks to a computerised system of frequently asked questions, information can be provided 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Individuals who wish to be attended by a person may contact the service Monday to Friday 8.00am to 3.00pm (except holidays).

Alejandra Ferrer, vice-president and councillor of tourism, said, "This is the 21st century, and we are committed to these communication tools that are so widespread among the population". She explained, "The goal is to reach and serve as many visitors as possible and offer them information that makes their stay on the island more satisfactory. It also means we can publicise year-round activities that don't revolve around the sun and the beach".

The service can be reached at 607 111 716, and further information can be found on the Consell de Formentera website and at tourist information points. Today, five years after Formentera unveiled its free WhatsApp-powered questions hotline, a wide array of information is available, including details on cultural events, the opening hours of heritage sites, conditions at beaches and more. The service is offered in Catalan, Spanish, English, French, Italian, German and Dutch. Telephone calls are not answered.

Formentera revisits push to educate tourists and residents about itinerant vending

The Formentera Offices of Commerce and Interior, in collaboration with the local small and medium-sized business group (PIMEF), have reactivated a push to stop visitors and islanders from buying from illegal waterside vendors.

Ana Juan, president and councillor of commerce, stressed "the importance of raising awareness among tourists and residents of the harm that itinerant selling does to local commerce and consumers themselves, considering it violates health measures, is not subject to controls, and increases litter on our beaches and in our natural environment".

The Consell de Formentera has put out a leaflet picturing a woman on a local beach responding "NO" to vendors' offers of drinks, fruit and clothes. Bearing the slogan "Protect local commerce: say NO to itinerant vending!", the document, printed in Catalan, Spanish and English, includes the following text:

"The fruits, drinks, clothing and accessories and jewellery that vendors peddle on our beaches have not passed legally mandated food and quality controls. They also constitute unfair competition for Formentera's businesses.

To stop it, we need the cooperation of all potential buyers. Please say NO to itinerant vending!"

These leaflets will be available at offices of tourism, PIMEF and the Citizen Information Office (OAC). The campaign will also be disseminated on the social media pages of the Consell de Formentera and Formentera Office of Tourism.

Josep Marí, councillor of interior, explained, "Campaigns like this are about educating potential buyers. They are the ones who can put a definitive end to illegal selling on our beaches". Since the start of the season, Formentera Local Police have issued 134 citations for itinerant vending. In May, 13 were for food and beverages. Of 56 citations issued in June, 7 involved clothing sales and 49 involved food or drink sales. Of 65 issued so far this month, 12 were for clothing and 53 were for food or drinks. Itinerant vendors operate on the beaches of the nature reserve and Platja Migjorn.
