Youth gather for second annual plenary sesion

foto 2021 ple infanciaParticipants in the island’s participatory youth council logged on this morning for a full-house assembly that was chaired by Consell de Formentera premiere Alejandra Ferrer and co-chaired by Formentera Department of Youth head Vanessa Parellada. Additional attendees included pupils from schools in Sant Francesc, Sant Ferran and la Mola and Marc Ferrer high school.

As President Ferrer welcomed plenary participants she drew attention to the key part they play representing voices of island youth. “We’re taking note”, she insisted. “The skate park young islanders pressed for is about to open in Sant Francesc, as is the children’s play area in Sant Ferran.” And the island’s schoolchildren earned praise for what Ferrer described as “the tremendous sense of responsibility you’ve displayed”.

Grabbing the spotlight among the issues plenary attendees brought before cabinet members in attendance were sustainable mobility, housing, subsidies for electric vehicles, kids’ play areas and the new skate park, among others.

Casal de Joves announces June calendar

foto 2021 juny casalThe Formentera Department of Youth is pleased to announce the calendar of events this June at the Casal de Joves, a bill whose standout features include two special activities for fiction and comic fans. The first comes Friday the 4th, as youth at the drop-in centre are invited to face off in the manga-inspired collectible card game YU-GI-OH. And on Friday the 11th the focus on Japan continues with a fancy dress session in the tradition of “cosplay”, a subculture whose members dress up as manga, anime and video game characters.

On Saturday the 12th island youth can join an outing to Eivissa to go karting! (Space is limited; signups at the Casal de Joves.) On Wednesday the 16th and Friday the 18th, we’ll host DIY workshops to build planters — part of the new decorations at the Casal.

Participants in a Friday the 25th workshop on artistic creation will learn how to do paper marbling, and on Saturday the 26th it’s an afternoon of skateboarding.

Cinema sessions on Wednesday the 23rd and 30th will centre on experiences of refugees. An additional screening will take place on the 2nd, and on Wednesday the 9th youth can catch a film about the environment on World Environment Day (5 June). Vanessa Parellada highlighted the programme’s diversity and “the Casal’s historic emphasis on current affairs that can shape awareness about sustainability and inequalities, among others”.

Social media
Something to say? Share posts on the Casal de Joves’ social media accounts. The theme on Saturday the 5th is the menstrual cycle. On Saturday the 19th the first beach photographs will be shared!

And lastly, dance class participants will meet at the usual time: Tuesday to Friday from 4.30pm to 5.30pm.

‘Lives inspiring lives’: Formentera hosts first-ever ‘Vívete’ for youth

cartell 2021 viveteThe Formentera Department of Youth reports that “Vívete—Lives inspiring lives” will take place tomorrow, Wednesday 26 May, for the first time on the island. Tailor-made for pupils at IES Marc Ferrer, the virtual conference will feature the inspiring stories of local Olympic athlete Mateo Sanz and Nadia Ghulam.

In her welcome address to participants, President Alejandra Ferrer will share her satisfaction presiding over the island’s first-ever hosting of Vívete, which she described as “a chance to give younger islanders role models in personal and emotional development”. “We hope pupils benefit from speakers’ experiences in self-improvement”, she affirmed.

Vívete
Organiser Carlos Ramón blames our modern lifestyles for “widespread disorientation, especially among young people” and insists society’s role models are but “products to be bought and sold”. Ramón describes the Vívete mission as “turning the spotlight on different role models and lifestyles that have the power to inspire”.

Vívete started in 2017 as a vehicle for human values, empowerment and resources to start young people on a conscious path to personal development. Leading experts in the field, among them Juan Pablo Escobar, Irene Villa, Toni Nadal, Elsa Punset and Miriam Fernández, have shared their own personal experiences in past Vívete editions.

Formentera Film youth programme, deep-dives on affective-sexual diversity and European Youth Week form core of May calendar at Casal

foto 2021 FF BThe Formentera Department of Youth Services announces the activities programme for this May at the island’s youth drop-in centre. The kick-off came at 8.30pm last Saturday, with screenings in the Casal courtyard from Formentera Film’s youth section. Seven shorts spanned fiction, animation and documentaries, and the crowd enjoyed “extrafest” features and scored a first-ever look at the street dance video shot in April with participants in the Casal de Joves’ dance course.

This week’s programme includes a movie night on Wednesday, TikTok contest on Thursday, table tennis tournament on Friday and talent show on Saturday.

On 12 and 26 May it’s the return of “Xerrades en línea”, a virtual lecture series presented in association with Chrysallis to create a shared space for learning and reflections on respect and affective diversity. And on Saturday 15 May, the International Day of Families will be celebrated with an outing to a trademark Formentera location.

Spring is a time for flowers and plants, so Friday 21 May will come with a workshop on making natural oils. Then on Tuesday 25 May, island youth can catch a talk on Molinet, a local project involving social currency.

European Youth Week
Youth chief Vanessa Parellada took special care to highlight activities related to European Youth Week, which she said were designed to “empower Casal youth, speaking to their interests and requests for deeper connections between Casal staff, the local youth department and island youngsters”. Related activities include a mountain bike ride on Saturday 22 May and a graffiti workshop on Saturday 29 May.

For more information, visit the Casal from 4.00pm to 10.00pm, Tuesday to Saturday, send an email to casal@conselldeformentera.cat, or send a message on Instagram (@casaldejovesformentera). Meanwhile, street dance classes continue 4.30pm to 5.30pm, Tuesday to Friday at the Antoni Blanc sports centre.
