Sant Jordi is back: book launches, vending stalls, theatre, concerts and exhibitions

cartell 2021 sant jordiEarlier today the Formentera Department of Culture and Education presented the activities bill for Sant Jordi 2021, with department chair Susana Labrador hailing the return of “a wide range of activities to bring literature and culture to our kids, teens and adults”.

Diada de Sant Jordi
The morning of the feast day of Sant Jordi, Friday 23 April, vending stalls will dot the central square in Sant Francesc and writer Vicent Ferrer Mayans will be on hand to sign copies of his book Carnatge l’últim Nibelung. Written between 2003 and 2006 and published recently by Lleonard Montaner, this dramatic work comes to life around a confluence of plots related to the violence of a contemporary war.

23 April also marks the release of the second issue of ADN, a local fanzine rising from the ashes in recent years to enter a new era of publication. The latest issue finds the usual cast of writers, cartoonists and creators welcoming new faces as they blaze ahead creating an expressive platform for regional talent and its devotees.

Project coordinator Vicent Ferrer and Miquel Costa, from ADN publishers Espai_F, will be on hand to present the fanzine 23 April as part of Sant Jordi 2021 celebrations in Plaça de la Constitució.

Youth programme
Activities for children and teens kick off at 5.00pm Friday 23 April with La veritable història del drac i la rosa (The true story of the dragon and the rose), a storytelling session in which Eva Lluch traces the origins of the Sant Jordi legend. Prehistoric women and men pinned creation of life on earth on an eminently powerful goddess from the sea. That was thousands of years ago. Over the aeons, the strength of the goddess would gradually come to be described as an evil that had to be fought. The feminine figure became a snake or dragon, and the tale grew to accommodate a god or hero who slew her. But though robbed of her story, the goddess and her force remained so awesome that, when killed, her blood left us with a parting rose.

Story time takes place in the courtyard of Centre Tur “Gabrielet” and reservations must be made before 10.00am on 22 April by contacting reserves@conselldeformentera.cat. Next day, an array of Sant Jordi-themed workshops will be held from 5.00pm at the Casal de Joves.

The programme continues on Saturday 24 April with a clown and magic show by Clownómadas. Utopía retraces the tale of a globetrotting clown whose longstanding mission has been to seek magic in all that surrounds him. The eclectic 50-minute production includes live music, magic, juggling, sleight of hand tricks, and show-stopping “smoke charming”.

Utopía is a family-friendly production and is appropriate for all ages. Sala de Cultura-Cinema, 6.00pm, Saturday 24 April. Reservations are required and can be made from today, Friday 16 April at www.entradesformentera.cat.

Concerts
Saturday 17 April, Formentera welcomes back musician Pau Riba as he commemorates 50 years since Jo, la Donya i el gripau was recorded here on the island. Over a decade since his last Formentera show, Riba returns, this time under the aegis of Barnasants, and ready to dazzle crowds with his poetic universe. Old-time favourites and, in these times of pandemic, reconciliation with the natural world are expected. The concert is part of the Barnasants cultural initiative and will take place at 8.00pm in the Sala de Cultura-Cinema. Tickets are already sold out.

Sunday 25 April, local trio Imaràntia will play in support their Formentera-inspired sophomore effort, which they say strives for emotional resonance while firmly resolved not to sacrifice one drop of spirit. 4 de Copes founder Maria José Cardona started Imaràntia as a duo with producer/musician Miquel Brunet. The two released Imaràntia on Ona Edicions in 2013, and recent performances find them disseminating the island spirit with help from violinist and percussionist Eduard Riera. The show starts at 8.00pm in the Sala de Cultura-Cinema. Reservations are required and can be made from today, Friday 16 April at www.entradesformentera.cat.

Exhibition
From Friday 23 April until Tuesday 27 April, with a Sunday break in between, Centre Antoni Tur “Gabrielet” will host a show of entries from the yearly Antoni Tur “Gabrielet” bookmark design contest, which turns 21 this year. The exhibition can be visited 10.00am to 1.00pm and 5.00pm to 7.00pm.

Book launches
At 8.00pm on Friday 30 April, Eva Tur will present her book Planeta tigre to crowds at Centre Antoni Tur “Gabrielet”. The event is organised by the Formentera chapter of Obra Cultural Balear.

Formentera launches online sales portal for tickets to cinema and cultural events

foto 2021 entrades cineThe Formentera Department of Culture reports that www.entradesformentera.cat, a online ticket sales hub, went online earlier today. Islanders can visit the site to purchase tickets for stage performances, cultural events and cinema sessions scheduled from Friday 23 April at the Sala de Cultura-Cinema.

Culture chair Susana Labrador explained, “This weekend, as in the past, film fans can get their movie tickets at the box office thirty minutes before the show. Next weekend, online ticket sales will also be possible. We’re embracing new technologies and offering this resource to respond to growing attendance at cultural programming”.

The website will also simplify the task of organising bookings for theatrical productions, Labrador said, pointing out that Covid-19 restrictions have required capacity at such events to be limited. Face-to-face service at the box office will continue until events are sold out.

Entradesformentera.cat
State of the art and intuitive, the Entrades Formentera site allows islanders to get their entrades, or tickets, quickly and easily. In a step forward for the environment, the paperless option lets cinemagoers enter the cinema by presenting a QR code figuring on digital tickets. The portal also gives up-to-date details about current films and other featured events, not to mention special offers and a wide range of other information.

Islanders can also reach the portal from the agendaformentera.cat website, which also underwent renovation earlier this year. According to Labrador, Entrades Formentera, the link from the Agenda Formentera website and the new weekly bulletin highlighting the island’s cultural programming all boil down to “making accessing Formentera’s cultural scene quick and easy”.

With Barnasants, Pau Riba returns to celebrate 50 years since made-on-Formentera recording

Pau Riba tops bill on 17 April with 50th anniversary tribute to locally-recorded Jo, la Donya i el gripau

Under Barnasants banner, local act Imaràntia take latest album to Barcelona and Palma

The Formentera Department of Culture reports that half a century after performer Pau Ribas cut Jo, la Donya i el gripau on the island, on Saturday 17 April, Formentera will welcome the singer back for an 8.00pm concert at the Sant Francesc cinema (Sala de Cultura). Attendees are asked to pay what they can, and email bookings are open till 10.00am the Friday before the function (reserves@conselldeformentera.cat). Over a decade since the singer’s last local show, Riba returns this time under the aegis of Barnasants, ready to dazzle crowds with his poetic universe. And let fans be advised: old-time favourites and, in these times of pandemic, reconciliation with the natural world are expected.

Three years into the Formentera-Barnasants collaboration and amid hard times for musicians in particular and cultural productions in general, Susana Labrador said organisers had shown “an unwavering will” to push ahead with festival plans. The culture chief asserted Formentera was “thrilled to be part of it still”, confiding, “We’re also looking forward to the concert from Pau Riba, and seeing hometown acts get their voices heard off the island”.

Clara Fiol and Joan Vallbona
When Clara Fiol and Joan Vallbona play to Centre Gabrielet at 8.00pm on 1 May, it will be the pair’s second local performance. It’s three years since the two began sharing their boundary-pushing brand of music and lyrics, the fusion of Vallbona’s electric guitar soundscape and Fiol’s tradition-steeped crooning. After releasing Silueta in 2018 on the Ona Musical label, the duo return with Petiteses, an ode to simplicity built around an admixture of originals and covers. Their Barnasants performance is co-presented by the Formentera chapter of Obra Cultural Balear, first-time sponsors at this year’s festival. Capacity is limited to thirty spectators.

Barnasants and Formentera, a strategic alliance
Considering the festival’s mission of connecting and promoting independent singer-songwriters, the decision to extend the Barnasants-Formentera alliance a third straight year owes much to Formentera’s primacy on the cultural map.

Round-trip journey
Barnasants has always been about forging a network where artists from the Catalan-speaking territories can share their work with non-local audiences. So, in due form, the festival won’t just be the occasion for Formentera to greet visiting acts, it will also find Formentera musicians performing on Mallorca and in Catalunya. In that spirit, with frontwoman Maria José Cardona, Imaràntia will present their latest effort to audiences in Palma and Barcelona.

Students in Teresa Matilla’s painting course expose work

cartell 2021 expo teresa matillaThe Formentera Department of Culture reports that at 6.00pm this Monday 5 April, students in artist Teresa Matilla’s painting course will pull the curtain back on a show of their creations that is on display at the “Ajuntament Vell” gallery. Participants concentrated on composition, dove deeper into their exploration of textures and, as the instructor explains, “we did our best to offset the effects of the pandemic with complementary insight and exercises via social media”.

Besides pieces crafted during this year’s course, the exhibition will feature creations from last year’s alums, whose 2020 show was called off amid the pandemic. The artwork will range from oil and acrylic to mixed media, a reflection of the range of techniques touched on during classes, with students enlisting recycled material as well.

The show is on view Monday to Saturday from 11.00am to 2.00pm and 6.00pm to 8.00pm.

Formentera welcomes back Leonmanso

foto 2021 leonmansoThe Formentera Department of Culture reports that from 8.00pm on Friday 9 April, Leonmanso will give a free concert in the courtyard of Centre Antoni Tur “Gabrielet”. Capacity is limited and seats can be reserved by emailing reserves@conselldeformentera.cat before Thursday 8 April at 10.00am.

Culture chief Susana Labrador said the concert was part of programming around this year’s Balearic Islands Day (Dia de les Illes Balears) — a bill that ultimately happened today after the pandemic forced its postponement in March. Complete safety protocol will be in force during the concert.

Llure Marquès is Leonmanso. He started composing his own songs more than 15 years ago. On the strength of a demo, he was named finalist in contemporary rock and Catalan creativity for IB3’s Rec-Play competition in 2008. There, a second-round win scored him the chance to record his first album, Rinosaure. Quim Torres (Delèn) was at the controls for a follow-up, Jardins de brutes basses (2014), while a third effort, 2018’s Escolta com sona es teu pols, was an album of absolute essentials.

Leonmanso is the musician you would invite to your birthday party, or when you’re making dinner, or before turning in for the day: in fact, he’d pen a song for the occasion. He sings it all, and sings for everyone. And that might be why sometimes, in the words of his producer, the whole world seems like a Leonmanso song —  and not the other way around.
