Agriculture minister logs first official visit to Formentera

foto-visita-bassa-de-reg-1-1Consell de Formentera president Alejandra Ferrer visited the island’s irrigation pond today with Mae de la Concha, chief of the Balearic office of agriculture. Other officials at the gathering included local councillors of environment and the primary sector, Antonio J Sanz and Josep Marí, respectively, as well as the heads of the regional government’s agriculture and water resource divisions (Gabriel Torrens and Joana Garau, respectively) and the managing director of Balearic Agency for Water and Environmental Quality (Abaqua), Guillem Rosselló.

Hailing De la Concha’s visit, Ferrer insisted that “the proper working order of the irrigation pond is crucial for Formentera because it enables us to close the water cycle”. The minister, for her part, pointed out that €94k already set aside in the 2020 budgets is intended so that only the highest quality water gets to local fields.

Purification plant expansion
Attendees also spoke about projects to equip Es Ca Marí with sanitation and upgrade the waste water pump in Es Pujols. The Abaqua chief said increasing capacity at the water treatment station known as “Edar” to 3,500 cubic metres would mean waste water from Es Ca Marí could be treated as well. Decision makers say that those measures, taken together, are key to making sure infrastructure works properly, and that the water ending up in fields and at the drainage pipe is clean—essential to closing the water cycle properly.

Ferrer identified high-grade water as vital to the Formentera government’s commitment to the local farming (in the past, that support has taken the form of reactivating the co-operative of Formentera farmers, in 2010, or creating the Farmland Reserve, in 2015). “So many fields that had sat fallow have been turned over to the co-operative so they can be tilled again; it’s a way to maintain our original natural beauty and reactivate the countryside”, she concluded.

This February at Casal de Joves, local youth celebrate Valentine’s Day and Carnival

foto ii2020 Agenda CdJoves2Formentera’s youth department wishes to announce its activities programme for February at the Casal de Joves. Every Wednesday at 6.30pm, Casal members can cosy up on the settee with popcorn, friends and a rotating selection of films of particular relevance to youngsters.

Friday the 7th and Saturday the 8th, a clay modelling workshop will give participants the chance to fashion their creativity. The first day will be devoted to making raw clay, while the second is reserved for decorating pieces.

The workshops keep coming on 14 February, when another guided arts and crafts session will present participants the opportunity to celebrate Valentine’s Day by making garlands and heart-shaped piñatas.

Next day, youth at the Casal can catch a workshop on Mexican cuisine. Then Friday 21 February comes with a couples’ tournament of table football, the winners of which will walk away with two free movie tickets.

Carnival
The Casal’s Carnival celebration happens Saturday 22 February. The only thing asked of partygoers is that they show up in fancy dress; the rest —music and fun— are provided. A prize will be awarded to the best dressed.

On Friday 28 February it’s el joc del diccionari. One of the world’s most entertaining board games, “the dictionary game” requires imagination, concentration and creativity. A day later, Casal youth are invited on trip to Eivissa to catch a film at the cinema.

Youth councillor Vanessa Parellada highlighted Casal staff’s tirelessness planning activities to increase the leisure options out there for Formentera youth and create community.

Workshops take place at 6.30pm at the Casal de Joves.

Marina Rossell tops lineup at Barnasants Formentera with concert this Saturday

foto 2020 barnasants 1Susana Labrador, Formentera’s vice-president and councillor of education and culture, stood in Palma’s Teatre Principal today to unveil the lineup of performing artists at this year’s jointly-organised —and two-time visitor to Formentera— Barnasants festival of independent songwriters. Labrador gave a press conference with Bel Búsquets, her opposite number on Mallorca, plus Teatre Principal boss Josep Ramón Cerdà, Barnasants director Pere Camps and the head of the Manacor city government’s culture division, Mateu Marcé, where all eyes were glued to the scheduled list of contributors—this year even on Menorca and Mallorca. Artists at the gathering included Quico Pi de la Serra, Tomeu Penya, Clara Fiol, Joan Muntaner “Xanguito” and Marcel Pic.

Susana Labrador pointed out the two very special Formentera concerts included on the Barnasants 2020 programme, along with another key component of the festival’s formula: promoting Formentera acts further afield. Labrador identified the success of last year’s Barnasants as the main driver behind the decision to go for it again in 2020. “We chose once again to partner with Barnasants in their promotion of independent music because it’s a way to connect islanders with cultural programming”. Labrador called the effort “particularly important with regard to younger generations and local artists, not to mention everything it does to make sure people in the other places Catalan is spoken have access to these cultural expressions”.

Topping the lineup is Marina Rossell, who performs to Formentera audiences at an 8.30pm show on Saturday 1 February in the Sala de Cultura. Cançons de resistència —“Songs of resistance”— showcases the sweet, unmistakable voice of new Catalan standards. Admission is free.

Rossell’s visit to the island is preceded by forty-plus years performing, more than twenty albums and a laundry list of awards and accolades earned by the artist. After blockbuster hits and homages to friend and object of admiration Georges Moustaki, Rossell revisits songs that shaped history, and does it as if singing about just one landscape, a single moment in time. She’ll sing songs-turned-hymns like “Bella Ciao”, the collaboration she cut with Manel that was later rocketed into stratosphere by an Italian group, or “Lili Marleen”, the mythical ballad that proved the gap between the German and Allied standards was all in our heads.

Attempting to squeeze Rossell’s career into the space of a few lines is a fool’s errand, but near endless tours of Europe, the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa surely merit mention. Among her many other distinctions, in 2017 she nabbed Barnasants’ own “Best Live Show” award.

7 March, Les Kol·lontai
On 7 March, Meritxell Gené, Ivette Nadal and Sílvia Comas, AKA Les Kol·lontai, will commemorate International Women’s Day (8 March) with a spread of feminist ballads. The free show starts at 8.30pm in the Sala de Cultura.

Cultural exchange
Formentera’s partnership with Barnasants means more than just programming concerts here on the island; it’s also about drumming up interest in Formentera acts away from local shores. In that spirit, having recently celebrating thirty years making music, hometown outfit Aires Formenterencs will present their latest effort before crowds at Barcelona’s Centre Artesà Tradicionàrius on Sunday 16 February. Then there’s Maria José Cardona. Barnasants 2019 saw her performing at the Harlem Jazz Club in Barcelona, and now the Formentera native is back for round-two, this time with a pair of recitals on Menorca: on Friday 6 March (Ciutadella) and Saturday the 7th (Maó).

Other acts on Mallorca and Menorca include Guiem Soldevila, who plays to the Manacor conservatory on Saturday 1 February, and Maria Jaume Martorell, performing in the Ciutadella bookshop Va de llibres on Friday 13 March.

Twenty-five this year, Barnasants’ independent music venture is unlike any other in Europe. The 2019 edition of the festival—when audiences saw duets from Roger Mas and Estel Solé alongside the pairing of Giorgio Conte and Joan Isaac—was the first where the Balearic Islands were represented.

Ferrer and Yllanes meet to shape strategy around Formentera’s energy situation

reunioenergiaj1Formentera president Alejandra Ferrer met at the seat of local government today with the deputy first minister and minister of energy and manufacturing in the Balearics, Juan Pedro Yllanes. Other participants included Formentera’s councillors of land and environment, Antonio J Sanz and Rafael González, respectively, and Aitor Urresti, who heads the regional government’s energy and climate change division.

Among the numerous points of key importance for Formentera that came up for discussion at the gathering, energy was the common thread. The deputy first minister described plans to instal a third electric cable linking Eivissa and Formentera, highlighting continued progress and environmental studies of the project now under way.

Talk also focused on the response to problems faced by islanders living near the Es Ca Marí substation, with Ferrer pleading for “urgent action” to alleviate the situation.

Energy facilities
Ferrer said work had already begun on Formentera’s special renewable energy plan to regulate and mandate the energetic, environmental and aesthetic sustainability of power stations on the island.

Conseller Yllanes reminded islanders about an info session set to take place this afternoon on money that the regional government in Palma is offering people who instal solar panels. President Ferrer called on the entire island to join the renewable energy cause—a prospect which, according to Yllanes, “Formentera’s size and consumption patterns make a whole lot easier”.

A nod to basketball’s local proponents

homenatge-ba--squet--3-2In celebration of Emilio Martínez and Toni Terrasa —two men considered the original pioneers of local basketball in the eighties— Formentera’s department of sport has announced that two new basketball hoops have been put up in children’s parks in La Savina and next to Marc Ferrer high school in Sant Francesc.

‘Hoops in the street’ is the name of an initiative backed by the Balearic Islands Federation of Basketball (FEBIB) and their foundation, FEBIB 1935, with support from Trasmapi Formentera basketball club and the Formentera government. The hoops were donated by Hotels Sirenis and feature a plaque commemorating the two players.

Sports councillor Paula Ferrer remarked on the two men’s “crucial work in the 1980s, when the resources to practice the sport were a long way from what we’re used to today”. Ferrer hailed the efforts of FEBIB 1935 as critical, adding: “I hope the whole island enjoys these two basketball hoops”.

The spearhead of another project known as ‘Hoops from the past’, FEBIB 1935 chair Jacinto Real says ‘Hoops in the street’ “is about reclaiming our story and tying it to the present, so we can protect the future of basketball in the islands”. First vice-president Ana Juan and citizen participation councillor Vanessa Parellada were also at the event, along with families and friends of Martínez and Terrasa.

League play and summer camp
Three decades ago, Martínez and Terrasa’s support of the sport took the form of summer camps and a local league—two wildly successful initiatives among local athletes (the league eventually grew to encompass more than ten men’s and women’s teams).

The two men were honoured by FEBIB 1935 at last year’s closing ceremonies for the island’s first-ever basketball summer camp. FEBIB 1935 has also put out a short film that traces the history of Formentera basketball through the accounts of some of its pioneers. FEBIB 1935 joined forces with the Miraprim production team and put out similar films across the archipelago.
