Formentera joins debate on four-day work week

foto 2023v recursos humansToday Paula Ferrer, human resources councillor of the Consell de Formentera, has participated in a debate on the four-day work week organised by the Balearic chapter of the Unión General de Trabajadores in Palma.

In remarks, Ferrer stressed that union negotiations last February led to approval of a new working group "to study the progressive implementation of the four-day work week in the services in which it is feasible". The Consell de Formentera is the first public administration in the Balearic Islands that is negotiating its implementation at the trade union table.

Ferrer explained that the aim of this proposal "is to improve workers' quality of life without affecting the quality of service" and stressed that "public policies should focus on the increasingly palpable feeling that we should work to live, not live to work". By the councillor's lights, "the pandemic showed us that people's priority is time to enjoy family and friends. If we are happy, motivation increases, and with it, productivity".

Ferrer was joined at the debate by José Ramón Mateos, who is UGT Public Services' Pine Island representative on Formentera (the original proposal was submitted to the Consell de Formentera bargaining table by UGT). The event was also attended by the Balearic ministers Iago Negueruela and Mercedes Garrido, economist and labour law professor Adrián Todolí and prominent members of the union.

Formentera urges caution during high fire risk season

With the onset of the high fire risk season at the start of May, Consell de Formentera firefighters have begun to carry out daily surveillance patrols in forested areas. Josep Marí, interior councillor, has asked islanders and visitors to exercise "the utmost caution and avoid recklessness that, paired with high temperatures, can cause forest fires".

Marí pointed out that there is a ban on fires within 50 metres of forested land from 1 May to 15 October. Fires lit in a 50-to-500-metre radius of forest land require an administrative permit from the Balearic ministry of environment.

The Consell de Formentera fire brigade comprises 15 full-time professional firefighters and one itinerant team member. Please call 112 if you have a fire-related emergency.

Formentera stages first-ever tourist guide course

foto 2023v curs guia turisticThe Office of Tourism of the Consell de Formentera is pleased to report that a training course for the tourism sector in which 27 people have enrolled has started this week. The course prepares participants to take the exams to obtain accreditation as tourist guides in the Balearic Islands. This is the first time that the course is held on Formentera and it has been tailored for participants who are not seeking accreditation, but who wish to improve their general knowledge of Formentera to better support the island's visitors.

Alejandra Ferrer, vice president and tourism councillor, shared her satisfaction that "for the first time we can offer this Formentera-specific training and thus have guides offering quality care to visitors and achieving employment".

Employers and workers can also take a module of general knowledge and obtain a Consell de Formentera-issued certificate that will help holders apply for benefits, take part in promotions on the Office of Tourism website, and be considered for recruitment in marketing activities. This course will take place afternoons in May and can be taken in person or online.

Exams for official guides of the Balearic Islands will be held 30 May. Twenty-one people have applied.

Consell gives Cooperativa del Camp €150,000 to further promote local primary sector

foto 2023v conveni cooperativaToday Ana Juan, president of the Consell de Formentera, and Marcos Ribas, president of the Cooperativa del Camp, signed a concerted action agreement between the two entities. Funding for this year's agreement has been increased from the 2022 amount of €130,000 to €150,000. Josep Marí, rural affairs councillor, and Carlos Marí, manager of the Cooperativa del Camp, also attended the signing.

This agreement seeks to give continuity to the actions of the public programme to revive the agricultural sector and improve Formentera's rural environment and landscapes. It also aims to reactivate agricultural activity on the island with all the economic, social, cultural and environmental advantages that this entails. To that end, the deal prioritises recovery and improvement actions on plots of land donated to an initiative known as the "farmland reserve", or cens de terres, as well as efforts to restore the Can Marroig-Can Ballet estate per the respective transfer documents included in the present agreement. The agreement extends to all actions carried out by the Cooperativa, which focuses on reinvigorating local farming and the island's rural spaces and landscapes.

The terms of the deal also entail an extension of the Cooperativa's contract to manage the Can Marroig-Can Ballet estate.

foto 2023v pianoThe Office of Tourism of the Consell de Formentera is pleased to announce that pianist and composer Alessandro Martire released a video of his new song "Faro de la Isla" today. Martire says that not only was the music inspired by Formentera lighthouses, they are also where the video was shot: La Mola lighthouse at sunrise, and Es Cap de Barbaria lighthouse at sunset.

Martire traced his decision to his love of "these inspiring places and their incredible nature". For the occasion, he brought the same Waves piano with which he gave a concert in Sant Francesc's Plaça de la Constitució last summer. The Office of Tourism Promotion has supported this project that associates the island with creativity, music, nature and tranquility.

Since 2021, Alessandro Martire has cultivated an original format with his Waves piano and shot video clips in natural locations like glaciers, frozen lakes, rivers and 3,000-metre-high mountains. Some of his other creations can be seen here.

The pianist and composer was born in Cuomo, Italy in 1992, and composed his first song at the age of 15. Inspiration for his songs is drawn from both classical and contemporary music.
