Misprint won't effect start of registration process for holiday rentals

carrer-de-sant-francesc alfred1The land office of the Formentera Council wishes again to apologise for a soon-to-be corrected misprint and hereby issues the present statement to inform islanders why the episode will not impact registration of vacation property rentals projected to start this April.

The publishing error involved new underpinnings on holiday rentals, initially expected—before the error occurred—to take effect in late summer. Reglament 1/2015, the statute that is presently in effect and which directs the start of the approaching registration process is in force until its replacement takes effect.

Three boxes must be ticked before rollout of the registration can take place: changes, including to tourism zoning and a cap on holiday rental permits, bringing the island's “Land Strategy” (Pla Territorial Insular) into compliance with regional tourism legislation; a new regulatory ordinance to set prices on holiday rental permits; and approval of the so-called “quality holiday rentals plan” (pla de qualitat d'estades turístiques).

The measures will receive final approval at the one-off plenary assembly scheduled this April, setting the stage for commencement of the registration process before the summer season starts, as previously announced by the Council.

Formentera Jazz Festival back June 6-9

jazz-festival premsa-21The Formentera Council's culture and tourism departments report that June 6–9, the Formentera Jazz Festival will return to the island for its fifth year. The Council-sponsored event is the creation of musician, cultural producer and Formentera native Maxwell Moya.

Moya describes FJF's fifth edition as “a combination of energy and art, plus local, national and international music”. Steadily growing since it first took root five years ago, the festival is expected to welcome some five thousand in 2019.

“These last five years have been beautiful to watch”, Moya said. “The festival has established itself on the island and cemented its place on the social and cultural scene”, he continued, “we're thrilled that both locals and attendees from further afield have made this show their own”.

In terms of performers, the FJF director and founder insisted this year's festival would “stay true to its roots. We've got a special place in our hearts for jazz, but the festival is open to so much more”. Moya made assurances that the other musical genres which have notably influenced jazz—hip-hop, fun, Latin jazz, Brazilian music, flamenco and even electronic music—would be featured as well.

Free admission
The festival is completely free and open to the public. This year festival-goers can catch performances at a number of venues, including Constitució square in Sant Francesc, Blue Bar on Migjorn, Chezz Gerdi in es Pujols and—new this year—Sa Panxa in Sant Ferran.

Artists
Tonina Saputo, Perico Sambeat, Max Holm Trio, Ermanno Panta & Banda Zeitun, Dj Uri Calleja and Midi Jazz Club are the first names on the line-up to be announced so far.

Jam session
As ever, the closing night of FJF will feature a jam session with all musicians, professionals and amateurs alike, on the island. It will be the chance to spotlight jazz music's stock in trade: improvisation.

CiF culture councillor Susana Labrador stressed that the Formentera Council supports FJF as a way to stimulate local culture and bolster entertainment options for tourists and residents.

The coming days will see the announcement of other artists and activities on the 2019 festival programme currently still pending confirmation. All the details can be found at: http://www.formenterajazzfestival.com/

Casa del Poble accord

conveni-casa-del-poble premsa1CiF chairman Jaume Ferrer met with Jaume Escandell of the la Mola Associació de Majors (Seniors Association) to put their signatures on a collaborative agreement between the group and the administration. The deal defines the terms of a temporary arrangement whereby, in addition to a grant to help cover maintenance and operating costs—like for promoting and sustaining association-based and community activities—the Council lets the Associació de Majors use the Casa del Poble's administrative facilities and multipurpose cultural space.

The Formentera Council's €30,000 grant, aimed generally at helping the Associació de Majors function and meet costs like maintenance, is also designed to stimulate the social sphere—organising and coordinating not-for-profit programming at the Casa del Poble at least once a week (this condition will not be enforced in summer).

Crews set out spreading garden clippings across Formentera countryside

foto-biotrituradora premsa1The Formentera Council's environment department announces that crews will begin dispatching garden clippings rich in bio-matter to fields across the island. Three thousand cubic metres of  green scraps already put through the chipper at the es Cap de Barbaria waste treatment plant are awaiting delivery.

“By taking the reins of management of our waste we can avoid sending it off site”, explained environment chief Daisee Aguilera. “We can turn it into an asset for the local ecosystem and agriculture”, part of a strategy for healthy fields which the councillor referred to as “closing the loop” in terms of managing organic waste. Gardeners' trimmings bolster the land's water retention, reduces evaporation, and “more than anything is a great way to trap all the moisture from recent rains in the soil”, Aguilera pointed out. The material is also effective for mulching, a technique consisting in covering the base of plants in order, among other benefits, to trap in moisture and prevent weeds.

Contacting transporters
Islanders interested in obtaining garden clippings for their land have only to pay for transport. The three firms assisting in transport—Foreva, Formentera Trucks and Construcciones Isla de Formentera—will take advantage of return journeys on trips to the treatment plant to haul away loads and dispatch them across the island. Beneficiaries of the service will pay based on the amount of clippings they wish to receive—€15 for 5m3, €20 for 8m3, €25 for 14m3 and €35 for 20m3. Islanders should contact the environment office (àrea de Medi Ambient, 971 32 12 10) or one of the freight companies directly.

The effort will help free up the Es Cap de Barbaria staging area for other uses, such as a compost pile with material collected from the island's medium-sized and large generators. The resulting compost will also be destined for local farmers' fields, enabling even more materials to be cycled back into the ecosystem. Gardening scraps were chipped with a “biochipper” purchased by the Formentera Council with help from the EU's Leader fund. The administration owns two smaller chippers which it loans to islanders free of charge so they can shred green trimmings generated at home. The service can be requested at the Citizen Information Office (OAC) or by contacting the environment office.
