Formentera lines up basic course for firefighters

foto curs bombers 2018 3 The president's office of the Formentera Council reports that a basic firefighting course will be held on Formentera December 10-22.

Intended for aspiring firefighters on the island who have successfully completed the selective process and are listed in Formentera's pool of job seekers, the 72-hour course mixes textbook-based and hands-on learning and is tuned for the realities of service needs on the island.

Instruction will cover first aid, traffic accidents, hazardous goods, work at height, indoor and outdoor fires, and a control and command module.

About 15 students will take part in the course, designed and driven by a nine-person team of healthcare teachers and veteran firefighters from the Emergency Staff company.

'Cantam Nadales'—an evening of carols and hot chocolate

nadal-2017-nadales Friday from 7 pm in Sant Ferran's plaça Guillem de Montgrí, the primary-school children of CEIP El Pilar in la Mola and Mestre Lluís Andreu in Sant Francesc will join the Formentera municipal band in putting on a Christmas concert. After a selection of holiday carols dubbed “Cantam Nadales”, or “We sing Christmas carols”, performers and onlookers alike are invited to hot chocolate and coca dolça fit for those with gluten and lactose intolerances.

This year is the concert's first in the recently completed Sant Ferran square, instead of Sant Francesc's plaça de la Constitució as in years past.

Honours given as Formentera's Christmas window dressing competition turns twelve

foto 2018 aparadorisme nadal 3 At noon today representatives of the Formentera Council and the local chamber of commerce handed out prizes for the twelfth Concurs d'Aparadorisme Nadalenc, or “Christmas Window Dressing Contest”. CiF trade councillor Alejandra Ferrer and chamber of commerce spokeswoman Lina Tur visited the winning establishments to deliver the honours.

This year's winning contestants were Sant Ferran's Casa Ortega, which scored a €225 first prize and an honorary plaque, Sant Francesc's Papereria Tur Ferrer (a stationary store) came away with the €150 second prize and plaque, and Parafarmàcia Gomà Roca in Sant Francesc was honoured with the €75 third prize and plaque.

The contest is put on jointly by the administration and chamber of commerce as a way to promote a festive holiday spirit across local businesses. This year roughly fourteen shops took part.

Starting Saturday, Diverespai is back

diverespai-2017 This Saturday the Formentera Council’s social welfare office welcomes Diverespai. A play space with activities and inflatable toys for children aged 3 to 12, Diverespai will be on the island December 15-19, Saturday to Wednesday, from 9.30am to 1.30pm and again from 4.00pm to 8.00pm. For three mornings starting December 17 the installation will be reserved for local schools.

Social welfare councillor Vanessa Parellada pointed out that every year “one of the best parts of the Christmas holiday comes right at the start”.

Inflatables and crafts
Diverespai is set up in IES Marc Ferrer secondary school’s sport module and is staffed by a team of 13 youth workers who supervise play. Giant blow-up castles, animals and shapes adorned with staircases, nets and obstacles are arrayed across the park while attendants propose guided play, face-painting and assorted arts and crafts.

“The idea is to fuse learning and fun—using play to fuel imaginations and creativity”, said Parellada. She noted “children are conscious that playing together makes us better at living together” and concluded, “It’s not a bad lesson for the start of the holiday season”.

Formentera talks tech with parents

xerrada noves tecn 2018-1--0011 The Formentera Council's social welfare office reports that Thursday December 13 from 8.00pm the Casal d'Entitats will host a discussion on the place of emerging technologies in our homes.

The gathering, which organisers hope is of use for parents who are overwhelmed or perhaps just a bit disoriented, will concentrate on ways to use new tech to assist in children's learning process. Technology is here to stay, and it is an immensely powerful tool, too, not to mention an incredibly useful one in children’s education.

The talk will be moderated by Belén Alvite, educator and director of the Centre for the Study and Prevention of Addictive Behavior (CEPCA) and Pilar Daviu, police liaison officer.
