On cultural tour, a stop at Formentera

Foto visita actefIn an announcement issued this morning by the Office of Culture, the Formentera Council reported that participants of ACTEF, an Eivissa/Formentera gifted students programme, had made a cultural visit to the island as part of an initiative called Erasmus +. After a first stop at Formentera's ethnological museum, the students visited several other local heritage sites, like the dry docks of Es Caló de Sant Agustí and la Mola's “old windmill” (el Molí Vell). The Council contributed logistical support and coordinated transport for the group.

Court dismisses Palma delegation's suit questioning legality of call for new recruits

foto policia localThe president's office of the Formentera Council announced today that the fifth chamber of a Palma court for administrative litigation had thrown out a suit brought by a state prosecutor representing the regional government in the Balearics. Dated September 1, 2016, the verdict dismisses the prosecution's case and orders the Spanish state to pay related court costs.

The state's counsel had challenged a decision by the Formentera Council, August 22, 2014, to green-light a call for nine new recruits to the island's local police force. The prosecutor unsuccessfully charged that the central government's ban on new hires applied to action by the Council. Escandell hailed the verdict as “confirm[ing] the legality of the Council's effort to consolidate the local police force”.

Pre-enrolment deadline extended at music and dance school

escola de musica festivalThe Formentera Council Office of Education has announced an extended deadline on pre-enrolment for the 2016-17 year at Formentera's municipal music and dance school. The added dates —from the first of the month to September 10— affect in-person registration at the Citizen's Information Office (OAC) as well as online signups on the Virtual Citizen's Information Office (OVAC) and the music school's homepage.

The school of music and dance offers both accredited and non-accredited courses of study in addition to workshop-style music and dance classes for children three and up. Last year roughly 300 people took classes at the school.

Fitness centre closed for maintenance

tasques manteniment facanaThe Office of Sport of the Formentera Council has announced the Antoni Blanc sports centre will once again open its doors to islanders September 12. Operations at the centre will cease for the first two weeks of the month to allow for maintenance. CiF sports councillor Jordi Vidal reported crews would clean the building's façade, disinfect changing rooms, the swimming pool and other areas and regulate chlorine in water at the centre.

Maintenance workers will also conduct a revision and inventory of lockers and other material at the centre. They will take time to refit old tiles and repaint part of the building's interior. The work will be done by Council staff and outside contractors. “These are things that can only be done when the fitness centre is empty,” said Vidal, who underscored the importance of such regular upkeep both for maintenance and hygiene reasons while apologising for the inconvenience it might cause.

The Antoni Blanc centre will re-open for sports centre and pool activities next Monday. Classes and timetables can be consulted here: http://www.consellinsulardeformentera.cat/images/stories/Horaris_poliesportiu_piscina/HORARIS_POLIESPORTIU_ANTONI_BLANC_imprimir.jpg

On the island and in concert: Manel

manel 1The Formentera Council Office of Culture has announced a fast-approaching concert from music group Manel. The band is scheduled to perform in the Sant Ferran square (plaça de l'Església) this Sunday September 4 at ten in the evening. Having topped the charts with hits penned in Catalan, Manel will plug their latest disc, Jo competeixo, and give a run-through of their most beloved songs from the past.

Unlike the group's first three albums, recorded in strict intimacy, the fourth offering from the Barcelona foursome marks their first experience working with a producer, North American Jake Aron. Besides collaborating with artists like Grizzly Bear, Jamie Lidell, tUnE-yArDs and Chairlift, Aron also produced rapper Le1f's debut effort.

When Guillem Gisbert, Roger Padilla, Martí Maymó and Arnau Vallvé take to the stage in Sant Ferran, there is little doubt about their ability to shake up the Formentera crowd. The show, from one of the most celebrated names in Catalan-language music in particular —and in Spanish music more generally—, will be free.
