parets panoràmica alfredo monteroFormentera's patrimony secretary, Susana Labrador, will take the floor before representatives at tomorrow's plenary assembly to unveil a proposal to give protected status to the traditional techniques used in building drystone walls.

Labrador's presentation will follow the announcement by Palma's directorate general of culture that it will seek inclusion of drystone wall building on the register of humanity's “intangible cultural heritage”.

The secretary added that Council officials planned to join a group drystone wall candidacy which links several of Spain's autonomous regions and is headed up by the central government's secretary of state for culture.

Labrador described Formentera's designation of the building techniques as intangible cultural heritage (or BIC, for bé d'interés cultural) as a “necessary first step if we want our campaign to be successful”.

Formentera hosts island's first dodgeball tournament

The Formentera Council's Office of Sports has announced that this Saturday, May 28, it will host a dodgeball tournament in the Antoni Blanc sports centre. Two hundred people have already signed up to take part, with categories ranging from peewee for the youngest to two teams for grown-ups. It will be the first ever such tournament on the island. Dodgeball in Spain (known in Catalan and Spanish as datchball) was developed as an educational sport by a school teacher in the Spanish region of Aragon. The game, which is designed to impart values like effort and teamwork, involves players from two co-ed teams lobbing three foam balls at each other,

Request to halt landing move under review

foto consell premsaThe highest court in the Balearic Islands, the TSJB (for Tribunal Superior de Justícia de les Illes Balears), will today begin review of the Formentera Council's administrative appeal against the project to relocate the Formentera ferry landing in the Eivissa port. The court has given the Balearic port authority until June 6 to present observations regarding the Council's request for a “cautionary suspension” of the plans to relocate the landing.

May 18 last, the Council issued the request —an appeal to defend the rights of Formentera residents— which had the support of all the Formentera political parties. The administration has also contacted the president of the Govern Balear in Palma in order to facilitate dialogue on the matter.

Youth council backs plan to relocate skate park

Foto ple infancia i joventutEarlier today, the Formentera Council convened a plenary meeting of the island's youth participatory council. CiF Jaume Ferrer was on hand to welcome the young councilmembers, students of the primary and secondary schools on the island. Vanessa Parellada, vice-president of the youth council and the CiF's councillor of social welfare, outlined the projects requested by participants at today's plenary. Over the next year, the CiF will undertake playground improvements at Formentera schools and parks, an initiative that was first adopted by the island's community representative board, el Consell d'Entitats.

Members of the youth participatory council issued a list of activities for kids and teens in hopes they are taken into consideration when programmes are drafted for upcoming local holidays. The activities list was drafted in response to a request from the CiF's Office of Culture and Local Holidays. Department head Susana Labrador pointed out the activities would be studied and options weighted. The Council pledged to include the proposals and pass them along to several committees and and local party associations.

The Formentera Council president proposed a new location for the skate park: between the children's play area near Sa Tanca Vella and the Sant Francesc roundabout. All the plenary attendants backed the idea. This is not the first time the island's youth have pushed for a skate park to be rebuilt. The Council put completion of the new park's construction at year-end 2016, start of 2017.

During the plenary, Núria Mayans, president of the Pau Mayans association, asked the attendants to keep individuals with disabilities in mind as they took part in the meetings. The neophyte councilmembers also showed an interest in current events such as the spike in snakes on the island and cases of theft and vehicle arson. Plenary meetings of the Formentera youth participatory are biannual; the first is held in November and the second was today.

Council backs six sporting events put on by local association

signatura conveni geeFormentera Council president Jaume Ferrer and Juanjo Escandell, president of a local sports and fitness association called Grup Esportiu Espalmador, came together today to put their signatures on a partnership agreement. Under the deal the Council will give the group 7,000 euros worth of financial backing for events scheduled in 2016. The money will go towards organising six sports meets: a race that links Formentera's two most famous lighthouses, a road cycling tournament, a mountain biking cup, a July-23 race dubbed la Milla Urbana, and two other popular footraces, la Pujada a la Mola and a memorial race for Formentera's beloved John Tunks.

Thanking the Grup Esportiu for its organising work, President Ferrer underscored the club's “pivotal role in promoting athletics, cycling and triathlon-style competitions”. For his part, Escandell gave thanks for the financial backing received. He said the money would mean lower registration costs and better planned events. Sports councillor Jordi Vidal was also at the signing. In addition to congratulating Escandell on his group's hard work, Vidal highlighted a part of the agreement that is aimed at “ensuring proper separation and collection of rubbish from sports meets”.
