Cala Saona to be scene of first international beach volleyball tournament

Foto presentació torneig voleiEarlier today, the Formentera Council’s Office of Sport announced the details concerning its first ever world amateur beach volleyball tournament, set to take place this Saturday on the Cala Saona beach at 12 noon. The CiF councillors in attendance at the morning press conference were Jordi Vidal, of the sports office, and Alejandra Ferrer, of tourism. Also present were two former players from the Spanish national volleyball team: Rafa Pascual and Ernesto Rodríguez, who is organising Saturday’s event.

The tournament will take place all weekend at Cala Saona beach, though one modality –four on four– will be at the centre of a championship that starts today and culminates in a final match at 5.00pm. As Councillor Vidal explained this morning, Maurizia Cacciatore will be the guest of honour at this weekend’s events. Ms Cacciatore, as Vidal noted, is considered by many to be the greatest player Italian volleyball has ever known. The councillor took the opportunity to urge the entire island to come out and “enjoy the waterfront show”.

The matches on Saturday and Sunday will be open to teams of two, in men’s and women’s categories. Morning games will start at 9.30am and recommence at 3.30pm. There will be eight playing areas and 40 participating teams. Sportsdreams is the company that, together with the Formentera Council, has coordinated the event.

Tourism

Councillor Ferrer explained that the tournament is part of Discover Formentera in May (Descobreix Formentera al Maig), a campaign to “expand the traditional season by proposing sports-related activities and other bonuses to off-season tourists”. Pointing to the sport’s popularity among Formentera’s Italian visitors, Ferrer said the Council hoped to entice tourists outside of the traditional summer season.

Council offers to remove vehicles abandoned on private land

Foto retirada vehicle abandonatThe Formentera Council's Office of Environment has announced that till May 31 it will remove derelict vehicles at no charge. The Council, together with the concessionaire at the vehicle disposal plant, Ca Na Negreta, is running a campaign to collect abandoned cars, motorcycles and scooters abandoned on private property.

“The aim of the initiative is to protect Formentera's natural beauty and enhance our local landscapes,” says Daisee Aguilera, councillor of environment of the CiF, “not only does removing these derelict vehicles contribute to a more beautiful countryside, but it reduces the risk of contaminating the soil where cars are abandoned.”

From May 2 to 31, Formentera residents can request for left vehicles to be removed from private property. Three removal options exist. If the person requesting removal is both the vehicle owner and landowner where the vehicle currently sits, a formal request must be made including proof of land ownership (notarised copy of title, property tax records, proof of waste collection tax payment, etc) and written consent for Council to access it.

If the applicant is the owner of vehicle, but not of the land where vehicle sits, he or she must present a formal request of removal including vehicle description and, preferably, consent from the property owner where the vehicle is parked. The documents must be accompanied by proof of land ownership (notarised copy of title, property tax records, proof of waste collection tax payment, etc). If applicant is the landowner where the vehicle currently sits, but does not own the vehicle, he or she must present a formal request of removal including proof of land ownership (notarised copy of title, property tax records, proof of waste collection tax payment, etc). When possible, applicants should provide identification and proof of vehicle owner's consent.

If vehicle owner cannot be contacted, removal proceedings can still carried out, though processing time will be longer and depend on various factors. For more information, contact the Office of Environment of the Formentera Council.

Councillor Aguilera reported that after May 31, proceedings will be brought against owners of abandoned vehicles, which can lead to fines of up to 3,000 euros.

Eight Formentera craft workers get accreditation

Foto diplomes artesansThe Formentera Council's Office of Trade has issued eight new cards certifying the training received by local craftsmen and women. The accreditation enables individuals to participate in the artisan markets of la Mola and Sant Ferran and serves as a way to promote local Formentera products. At a morning press conference department head Alejandra Ferrer congratulated recipients on their hard work on the accrediting exams. Since its launch in 2008, the programme has delivered 59 craft worker cards, nine cards for master artisans and four honorary cards. In Ferrer's words, “the idea is to improve the quality of our markets while simultaneously boosting the creations of our local artisans.”

First introductory farming course for kids

AGRICULTURA PER NENS 2016 webKids between three and twelve, this is for you. The Formentera Council, by way of the Office of Agriculture, has announced the launch of an introductory course in farming for children, the first of its kind. Signups will remain open until May 16 or until the course reaches its 30-child limit and will take place in person at the Citizen's Information Office (OAC) and online across the office's virtual platform. So explained the CiF's councillor of rural affairs, Bartomeu Escandell, in a press conference earlier today. Happy to see the project take flight, Escandell called the course a reflection of “the administration's determination to invest in our children's agricultural connection at a very young age”. According to the councillor, farming is important because it is part of Formentera's traditional past, “but also because it's part of a healthy lifestyle”.

After the May 16 deadline, the agriculture office will call families to confirm enrolment. The course itself will start the third or fourth week of May. It will run six weeks with one two-hour session per week. Participants of the workshop-style course will be divided into three different groups. One group will meet Tuesdays 5.30-7.30pm, another on Fridays at the same time and a third group will meet on Saturday mornings, 10.00am to 12 noon. There is a ten-child limit per group and children will be assigned on a first-come first-served basis and according to the preference stated at enrolment. The classes are free and will be held in the play area near the sa Tanca Vella chapel in Sant Francesc. Remember to bring comfortable clothes and appropriate shoes.

Council and Baleària's social arm clinch renewed cultural partnership

CiF president Jaume Ferrer and Ricard Pérez, head of Fundació Baleària, have renewed a partnership agreement to sponsor cultural activities on the island.

Cultural councillor Susana Labrador, also present at the signing, explained that the agreement, first struck in November 2015, is “the driving force behind the increase in cultural programming on the island”. According to the councillor, thanks to the partnership a number of homegrown Formentera acts also been exported.

For Baleària, the agreement —and promoting exhibitions and concerts from other Balearic artists— is a sign of its commitment to Formentera. Another example of this is La Baralla de les Meravelles, an exhibit by Valencian painter Ramon Pérez Carrió currently at La Caixa bank's gallery space.

Last year the Fundació Balear, the Formentera Council and Obra Cultural Balear programmed a series of musical acts under the banner Un mar de paraules. The series included performances by Andreu Valor, Estellés de má en má, Pau Alabajos, Meritxell Gené and others.
