Beni Trutmann honours nine of 87 participants

1e Premi Blanc i negre Entre Lineas. Jose TomasYesterday at eight in the evening, not only did jurors name the winners of the 14th Beni Trutmann photo contest, the Formentera Council Office of Culture pulled up the curtain on an exhibition of prints from this year's competition. The showing will remain on display from Monday through Friday, 10.00am to 2.00pm, until May 7 at the municipal gallery (Sala d'Exposicions) of the Ajuntament Vell.

Since its inception, the Trutmann competition has focused on Formentera nature in all of its forms —landscapes, flora and fauna, humans in nature— as the reflection of an unwavering environmental commitment. When he died, Trutmann bequeathed more than 30,000 photos to Formentera, all of which show the photograph's deep love for the natural beauty of the island. The idea of a photo competition came about as a way to pay tribute to Trutmann, said CiF culture councillor Susana Labrador.

New category, smart phone

To teach Formentera's youth about this important local figure, this year, organisers of the competition decided to propose a new category to participants: photos taken on smart phones. The category is open to anyone between 12 and 18 and, according to organisers, participants have already taken a shine to it. The Polaroid company signed on to participate as well, offering photo material as prizes for this year's contest.

Eighty-seven people participated in the 2016 Beni Trutmann competition. In black-and-white and colour, 48 photographers submitted a total of 131 prints. In the new smart phone category, 39 individuals sent in 109 photos. All submissions will now become part of the Council's photo archives.

The jury for the competition was formed by a representative from the Formentera branch of the Balearic birdwatching and nature group, a representative from the local arm of Obra Cultural Balear, two individuals with experience in visual arts and one staff member from the Council's Office of Youth Services.

Special afternoon of 'La Ventana' in Formentera

Carles Francino fotoWith nearly one million listeners tuning in to hear Cadena SER's radio programme La Ventana, the show, hosted by Carles Francino, has got higher ratings than any other in its slot. Next Friday, Francino and the show's crew are packing their bags and setting sail for Formentera. From 4.00 to 8.00pm, the crew will broadcast a special episode, live, from plaça de la Constitució in Sant Francesc.

Seeing the event as an unparalleled opportunity, Formentera's tourism advisory board (el Patronat de Turisme) has decided to back the show by bankrolling its 13,000-euro production costs. Securing such promotion, says CiF tourism councillor Alejandra Ferrer, is one of the board's duties. “The Patronat's work involves collaborating with local, family-themed programmes that place importance on the things that make us unique,” she said. According to Ferrer, the fact a programme is broadcast in the off-season makes it even more liable to attract the board's attention. Such programmes are more likely to appeal to tourists coming from the Spanish mainland, which, the councillor added, “have got the most connections to Formentera and constitute the island's biggest low-season market.”

On the day of the programme an audience area will be set up on the Sant Francesc square and all of Formentera is invited to come out to see the show recorded live. Ferrer, suggesting other audiovisual collaborations might be in store, said the Council was currently in talks to programme more events like this one.

Formentera renews partnership with local cultural institute

Signatura conveni OCB FormenteraFormentera Council (CiF) president Jaume Ferrer sat down today with Maria Teresa Ferrer, president of the Formentera-branch of the cultural institute Obra Cultural Balear (OCB), to renew a partnership agreement in place between the two entities since 2011. The pact is valued at 7,000 euros, money which is intended to “complement the offer of cultural programming, fund Catalan language classes and provide consulting for the administration,” according to the CiF president.

The Obra Cultural Balear chief thanked the CiF for the show of support and seized the opportunity to speak about one of the institute's most challenging projects at present: a catalogue of all the public and private roads on the island of Formentera, an initial version of which will be ready this year.

Also at the signing was CiF councillor of culture Susana Labrador. Both Council officials took the opportunity to congratulate the new OCB president on her recent appointment to the post.

Certificates of completion for students of quality tourism courses

Entrega diplomes PimefToday in the plenary hall of the Formentera Council, councillor of commerce Alejandra Ferrer and Pep Mayans, president of the Formentera small and medium-sized business association (PIMEEF), handed out certificates of achievement to students of the PIMEEF's Council-sponsored courses. Some 130 individuals participated in the training sessions, which spanned ten days and were designed to improve students' skills in retail work settings, leadership and tourist customer service. Additional courses were focused on traditional Formentera pastry-making and cocktails.

According to Councillor Ferrer, the courses were aimed at “providing workers and tradesmen training opportunities to improve the services offered to visitors and residents.” In the councillor's words, the initiative is “less about infrastructural improvements and more about bettering the quality of services provided.” The PIMEEF president thanked participants for taking part in the training and stressed the importance of promoting such opportunities on the island. The Council has provided €15,000 in funding for the courses.

Formentera and Colombia look ahead to cultural, artistic exchanges

foto visita cònsol colòmbiaEarlier today, Formentera Council president Jaume Ferrer and social welfare councillor Vanessa Parellada met with the recently appointed Colombian consul in the Balearic Islands, Diego Felipe Cadena Montenegro. Afterward, the president thanked Cadena for his visit, which took place in the president’s office and, according to Ferrer, involved both sides expressing a desire to “launch cultural and artistic exchanges.” Ferrer described the process ahead as one of “sitting down with Colombian residents here on the island and finding out where the most interest exists for exchange programmes.”

The Colombian consul pointed out the presence in his country of a chain of islands –San Andrés, Providencia y Santa Catalina– he said bears similarities to the Balearics. The Colombian archipelago’s experience, he noted, “could be of interest to the Balearics in general and to Formentera in particular.” Cadena pledged to help the Formentera Council establish contacts with the Colombian archipelago, whose similar geographical conditions mean “[Formentera and San Andrés, Providencia y Santa Catalina] have got plenty to talk about”.

According to Councillor Parellada, Formentera is home to nearly 200 residents of Colombian origin, a fact which places the South American country third from the top on the list of non-European countries with residents on the island. In the words of the councillor, “our Colombian communities are among the most active we’ve got. They are also very involved in the community and their connections go deep, which makes for a better experience for everyone.”
