Formentera celebrates Environment Week with guided tours, community cleanups and workshops for children

cartell 2021 setmana medi ambientThe Consell de Formentera is pleased to present Environment Week (Setmana del Medi Ambient), a series of activities organised in association with various local groups and businesses to educate islanders about protecting the environment. The programme starts Saturday 5 June, World Environment Day, and runs until 12 June. Scheduled activities include cleanups of the coastline and seafloor, workshops for kids and guided visits of the natural reserve.

Environment chief Antonio J. Sanz said the initiative and accompanying wide-ranging activities bill were about “educating as many people as possible, standing up for what’s right and having fun while we’re at it”. The councillor pointed out that all events are free of charge and encouraged everyone to take part in a week that “will make us that much more familiar with our natural surroundings”.

5 June—World Environment Day
10.00am. Clearing and counting micro-plastics in es Carnatge with Plastic Free and Qué Celeste!
10.30am. Picking up and sorting waste in es Carnatge with Plastic Free and Qué Celeste!

9 and 11 June—Birdwatchers’ and salt pans route
7.00pm to 8.00pm. Posidonia organises a survey of birds that inhabit or visit the salt pans and Estany Pudent. The route starts at camí des Brolls and ends at Salines Ferrer, where visitors will take home a sample of salt. 12 June—World Oceans Day
To help commemorate World Oceans Day (8 June), an array of activities have been lined up on 12 June under the banner ‘The invisible face of the planet’:

8.00am. Underwater cleanup with Formentera Divers. Signups: 971 18 05 61. Space is limited.
3.30pm. Underwater rubbish cleanup with Vellmarí. Signups: 971.322.105. Space is limited.
10.00am to 12.30pm. Clean Wave children’s workshops at Can Marroig. Games and stories to raise awareness and turn children into drivers of change. With educator Pilar Gómez in the Can Marroig courtyard.

Workshops organised by age and subject. 10.00am to 11.15am: Plastic-free workshop (for ages 3 to 9); 11.15am to 12.30pm: Algacadabra workshop (ages 6 to 12); and 12.30pm to 1.45pm: Plasticcadabra workshop (ages 5 to 12).
